CAT Colleges – Comprehensive Guide For Aspiring MBA Candidates

Here is a comprehensive guide to CAT colleges and the process involved in gaining admission to such colleges.

  • Understanding the Eligibility Criteria for CAT: The eligibility criteria for CAT are not uniform and vary from college to college. Most CAT colleges prefer a minimum of 50% marks in the qualifying examination, however, some may expect higher marks in order to make the cut. For the general category, there is no restriction on the age limit, but some colleges may put an age limit for reserved categories.

For international students, the eligibility criteria is linked to their country of origin. Age and academic requirements may vary from country to country, and the applicants must make sure they meet the eligibility criteria.

  • Types of CAT Colleges: There are several types of CAT colleges in India. These colleges offer a wide variety of courses from MBA to post-graduate programs and research. CAT colleges are classified Into two categories –  first-tier and second-tier colleges.

The first-tier CAT colleges include the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) as well as reputed institutions such as the Management Development Institute (MDI) and Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI). These colleges are especially popular due to their international repute and the fact that they provide MBA programs in multiple disciplines.

The second-tier CAT colleges include prestigious universities such as the Symbiosis Institutes of Business Management (SIBM), International Management Institute (IMI), Balaji Institute of Modern Management (BIMM), and many other colleges. These colleges provide a range of courses, from certificate programs to post-graduate and research programs.

  • Understanding CAT Selection Process: The selection process for admission to CAT colleges differs from college to college. However, it generally consists of 3 steps – a written exam, the Group Discussion (GD), and the Personal Interview (PI).

The written exam assesses the knowledge and aptitude of the candidate. The marks obtained in the written exam are used by the institute to shortlist the candidates for the GD and PI rounds. Generally, the shortlisted candidates need to participate in the GD and PI rounds to gain admission into the college.

The GD round Is designed to test the communication skills of the candidates. In this round, candidates are placed in groups and required to discuss different topics of business. The performance in the GD round is evaluated based on the content as well as how the candidate articulates their views, takes up leadership roles, and listens to others.

The PI round Is used by the college to gauge the candidate’s overall personality. Generally, the college assesses the candidates on the basis of their attitude, ability to think critically, articulation, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving capabilities.

The performance ’n the PI round is assessed by the senior faculty of the college. Questions asked are usually related to the course the candidate is applying for, the current industry trend, and their career aspirations.

  • Courses Offered by CAT Colleges: CAT colleges offer a range of courses, from MBA and PGDM to certificate and research programs. The MBA program is usually divided into two tiers, the first tier comprising the Post Graduate Programs in Management (PGP) offered by the IIMs and other colleges. These courses are usually short-duration courses that cover specialized topics and provide insight into current industry trends.
