Frequently Asked Questions About GMAT 2023 Counselling

Q. What is the GMAT examination?

Ans. The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) and consists of four sections: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning (IR), and analytical writing assessment (AWA). The GMAT exam lasts three and a half hours and is a key part of the admissions process for many of the world’s best business schools.

Q. What score is required for admission to a top business school?

Ans. Business schools evaluate each application individually, taking into account each applicant’s merits. GMAT scores are simply one component of the MBA application process, which typically also involves admissions essays, work experience, and individual interviews. If the rest of your application is lacking, a high GMAT score will increase your chances of admission.

Q. Is the GMAT truly required for MBA applications?

Ans. Generally speaking, yes. Nevertheless, some business schools also accept Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, and some have their own entrance examinations. You should always verify with the business schools to which you plan to apply in order to determine the requirements for your MBA applications; nevertheless, GMAC maintains a database of schools that use their exam as part of their admissions criteria.

Q. What is the distinction between the GMAT and GRE?

Ans. While the GMAT is only utilised as an admissions test for MBA schools, the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is accepted by a wide variety of master’s programs. Because of this, the GRE is accepted by fewer business schools than the GMAT.

However, some MBA applicants will have already taken the GRE at some point in their academic careers and may not choose to retake it. In addition, some applicants may be undecided between an MBA and a master’s degree and hence desire to maintain their choices open.

Q. How do I best prepare for the GMAT?

Ans. This is a challenging issue to answer because everyone should prepare in the manner that works best for them. Many GMAT exam-takers spend three to six months preparing with one of the numerous available “GMAT test prep” businesses. Others purchase retired questions or official GMAT publications and engage in as much practice as feasible. You should choose the appropriate approach.

Q. Which GMAT preparation firm is the best?

Ans. The answer to this question depends much on individual preference. Each ‘GMAT test prep’ company is unique in some manner, and some will be a better fit for you than others.

Q. What should I expect on the day of my GMAT exam?

Ans. The GMAT is administered via computer, although minimal computer skills are required to participate. Before each portion, there is a practice session so that test takers know how to use the computer and how to answer the questions.

If a participant encounters any difficulties during the exam, a support area is offered. While using the help area, the clock will continue to run. As soon as each part begins, test takers must remember that the clock will continue to run until the section’s allotted time has expired.

There is also the possibility of two five-minute pauses between stages.

Q. What should I bring to the GMAT examination?

Ans. In order to take the examination, you must first register on the GMAT website. Then, you must bring the letter or a printed copy of the email you received from Pearson VUE (who administers the exam on behalf of GMAC) to your test.

In order to establish your identity, you will also need to bring identification. In some countries, a passport is required, but in others, you may bring alternative government-approved identification. You will be informed beforehand of the acceptable forms of identification at your GMAT test center.

It is optional, but you may additionally bring the contact information for five business schools to whom you would like to send your official score report. It is advised to choose your colleges before taking the GMAT, as you will be charged for each score report you provide subsequently.

Q. How does the format of the Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) work?

Ans. Due to the CAT style of the GMAT, each participant’s test is personalized during the exam. During the quantitative and verbal parts, if a student answers a question correctly, they will be presented with a more challenging question. If a student answers a question poorly, they will be presented with a question that is considered easier.

Q. How is my GMAT score determined?

Ans. The overall GMAT score is determined by combining the scores from the Quantitative and Verbal portions, and participants receive a score between 200 and 800. Higher scores indicate higher skills. However, business schools also receive the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) scores, which range from 1 to 6, the Integrated Reasoning section score, which ranges from 1 to 8, and Verbal and Quantitative score breakdowns, which all range from 0 to 60.

Q. How many times am I permitted to take the GMAT?

Ans. Participants may take the GMAT as many as five times each year. However, business schools can still view the GMAT scores of candidates. If an MBA admissions office observes a candidate’s improvement over the course of two or three tests, it may be seen favorably. Nevertheless, if the contrary is true, it could be detrimental to your application.

Q. How long will the validity of my GMAT score last?

Ans. This depends on the business schools to which you apply. The majority of admissions offices will accept GMAT scores that are up to five years old, but if this could be an issue for you, you should check with the business schools to which you are applying.

Q. How do business schools learn your GMAT score?

Ans. To ensure that all results received by MBA admissions departments are authentic, GMAC delivers business schools the GMAT scores.

On the day of the exam, you can choose up to five business schools to whom GMAC will send your result for free. You will be charged an extra cost for each set of GMAT scores you choose to send after test day.

Q. If I am unhappy with my GMAT score, is it possible to cancel it?

Ans. Yes, though it is not generally recommended. Prior to viewing your results, you will be given the option to cancel them. You will be unable to cancel your results after viewing them.

This may reflect negatively on your MBA application if you choose to send future GMAT scores to the same business schools to which you canceled a previous GMAT score.
