Nalanda University History

From the fifth to the twelfth centuries CE, the University lived a lengthy and distinguished life that lasted practically continuously for 800 years. It was an entirely residential institution with 10,000 students and 2,000 faculty members. The Nalanda ruins illustrate the entire nature of knowledge sought and transmitted at this university through the architectural elements they contain. It implies a peaceful coexistence of man and nature.

Scholars came to study under Nalanda Universityprofessors from far-off regions including China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia, Turkey, Sri Lanka, and South East Asia because of their teachers' great knowledge. The atmosphere, architecture, and educational experiences at this distinctive university have been documented by these researchers. Chinese academics have provided the most in-depth accounts; XuanZang, who returned with hundreds of scriptures that were later translated into Chinese, is the most well-known of these.

The first step towards realising the aim of reinventing the old Nalanda was therefore taken when the Hon'bleDr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a former president of India, suggested the concept of restoring the historic Nalanda University in a speech to the Bihar State Legislative Assembly in March 2006. Nearly simultaneously, the government of Singapore offered the "Nalanda Proposal" to the government of India, calling for the restoration of old Nalanda in order to make it the centre of Asia once more. In the same vein, the State Government of Bihar quickly embraced the innovative concept and sought advice from the Indian Government on the best course of action. It also started looking for an appropriate place for the future Nalanda University at that time.

The diversity, a knowledge ecosystem flourishing on shared creation of new information, and an international perspective that distinguished the ancient Nalanda University still serve as the foundation of the modern Nalanda University. As a result, when they gathered in the Philippines in January 2007, the leaders of the sixteen East Asia Summit (EAS) member states accepted the plan to re-establish Nalanda. Of course, historical Nalanda served as the main source of inspiration. However, the concept was simultaneously futuristic and true to the historic seat of learning's values and standards, which have been shown to be both universally applicable and useful.

We might even think of such as workable answers for a shared, sustainable future that benefits everyone, not just Asia. This explains why the global community eagerly embraced the regional movement to revive Nalanda University. The concept then received further support. More participants at the fourth East Asia Summit, held in HuaHin, Thailand, in October 2009, supported the idea of regional networking and collaboration between the University and already-established centres of excellence in the region.

Nalanda University Act 2010 was approved by both Houses of the Indian Parliament, the project finally gained momentum. After a gap of over 800 years, the University reopened its doors to the first group of students in September 2014, works to re-establish the ties and linkages that once existed in the Asia region before the advent of historical factors that caused their breakdown. Asian civilizations share a range of deep historical connections that are reflected in their shared cultural traits. The re-discovery of inter-Asian linkages in recent times has led to a resurgence in discovering and building upon a shared history.

Nalanda University is envisaged as an icon of this new Asian renaissance: a creative space that will be for future generations a center of inter-civilizational dialogue.
