UGC Writes Letter to Universities, 31st October to be Celebrated as National Unity Day

On 26th October 2023, UGC wrote a letter to the universities under the Ministry of Education regarding the celebration of Amrit Kalash Yatra under the ‘Meri Mati Mera Desh Campaign’. UGC has urged Higher Education Institutes to celebrate National Unity Week on 31st October 2023. They further added that ‘Higher Education Institutions are requested to organize a pledge-taking ceremony to mark the occasion of Rastriya Ekta Diwas’.

Rastriya Ekta Diwas also known as National Unity Day, is a significant celebration for every Indian. India’s one of most prominent leaders Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel has always been the symbol of unity in our country. Thus, on his account, National Unity Day is celebrated on his birth anniversary.

With the idea of making the universities and students foster a sense of unity, strength, integrity, and security in our country UGC has expressed their take on the occasion. This would also be a new start of a tradition to celebrate Rastriya Ekta Diwas and a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai’s birth anniversary.

National Unity Day

On 31st October 2023, also the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, UGC also requested the Higher Education Institutes to observe National Unity Week as well which is from 25th to 31st October. This would engage various distinct interests of youth for this special occasion of Ekta Diwas, to create a sense of unity among the students.

Events like Unity Run, essay writing, team games, slogan writing, poetry, and paintings all together will engage students in a special way on this special day. Utilizing online resources and social media platforms the universities can tag the Ministry of Education of India to spread the fundamental components of the day like unity and integrity.

Establishing an idea of ‘Run for Unity” on 31st October would be one of the main events on the occasion. This would involve people from all societies including staff, faculty, and students, to make a commitment to our nation’s strength.

National Unity Day Pledge

The pledge-taking ceremony is placed as one of the compulsory events on the occasion.

This is the pledge for Unity Day– ‘I solemnly pledge that I dedicate myself preserve to the nation. The unity, integrity, and security of the nation, and also strive hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen. I take this pledge in the spirit of the unification of my country which was made possible by the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I also solemnly resolve to make my own contribution to ensure the internal security of my country’.
