In a statement that is bound to excite many medical students and aspirants, the NMC has confirmed that the number of MBBS and PG medical seats has seen an increase of 130% over the last decade. As of 2024-25, there are 780 medical colleges in India, with an enhanced further medical educational infrastructure boasting of more than 1.08 lakh MBBS seats and 70,000 PG seats.**

This information came during a Lok Sabha session when several participants were questioning about the further developments of medical education and the AYUSH and traditional medicine workforce.

NMC’s Statement on NEET and Medical Infrastructure

Parliament was addressed by the NMC stating the increase is in tandem with the government’s initiative to improve the healthcare structure within neglected areas. Policies that have been crafted that are responsible for this expansion include:

  • Soften land criteria for the incorporation of new medical colleges
  • Fiscal assistance to the states under Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS)
  • Authorized setting up of medical colleges in district hospitals
  • Training being digital, simulation-based, or other means that can substitute for faculty.

AYUSH Practitioners: A Parallel Healthcare Backbone

The government also emphasized the necessity of AYUSH doctors for India’s healthcare system as they are trained in Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy.

  • Doctors Ayush have been Employed: Athousands of them at PHCs and CHC’s
  • MoUs have been Signed with States: Specifically intravenous permutations to AYUSH services in rural areas
  • Training has been Designed: For basic diagnostics, primary medical treatment, and other referrals
