No Action Yet Against NMC Over Unpaid Stipends to Medical Interns – Students Demand Urgent Intervention

New Delhi, March 19, 2025 – Medical Interns Await Justice as Stipend Delays Continue

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has come under scrutiny as thousands of medical interns across the country continue to struggle with delayed or unpaid stipends. Despite repeated pleas from students and protests by various medical associations, no concrete action has been taken against the institutions failing to comply with stipend regulations.

The Issue: What’s Happening?

Medical interns, who play a crucial role in hospitals by assisting doctors and handling critical cases, are entitled to a monthly stipend as per NMC guidelines. However, in several states, interns from government and private medical colleges have reported either receiving partial stipends, irregular payments, or no stipend at all.

Students Speak Out – Frustration Grows Over Inaction

Medical students have taken to social media and student forums to voice their concerns. Many have tagged @MoHFW_INDIA, @NMC_INDIA, and state health ministers, demanding immediate intervention.

🗣 “We work 12-15 hours a day, handling real patient cases, yet we don’t even get our promised stipend. How are we supposed to survive in cities with high living costs?” – says an intern from a government medical college in Delhi.

🗣 “We were promised ₹25,000 per month, but it’s been 4 months without a single payment. Even after multiple complaints, nothing has changed!” – a student from Maharashtra’s top medical college shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Why the Delay?

The reasons behind the stipend crisis include:
Funding delays from state governments in some public institutions.
Private medical colleges refusing to pay interns, citing financial constraints.
Lack of strict enforcement by NMC, allowing colleges to bypass regulations.

Previous Directives – Ignored or Ineffective?

The NMC had earlier instructed all medical colleges to ensure timely stipend payments, warning of penalties and potential derecognition for non-compliance. However, with no visible action taken against defaulters, students are losing faith in the system.

What’s Next? Will the Government Intervene?

✔ Student bodies and medical associations are planning nationwide protests if the issue remains unresolved.
✔ Some students are considering legal action against their colleges.
✔ The demand for a central regulatory system for stipend disbursal is growing.

Final Thought: A Call for Justice

Medical interns dedicate years of rigorous education and hands-on training to serve the nation’s healthcare system. The least they deserve is timely financial support for their hard work. Will NMC finally take strict action, or will students continue to suffer in silence?
