King’s College London’s Professor Dame Anne Marie Rafferty Recognized in New Year’s Honours List

King’s College London is proud to announce that Professor Dame Anne Marie Rafferty CBE, a Professor of Nursing Policy at the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care, has been nominated by the Prime Minister for a life Peerage within the House of Lords in the New Year’s Honours List.

This prestigious accolade highlights Professor Rafferty’s exceptional contributions to nursing, healthcare, and policy over the course of her remarkable career.

Professor Rafferty is renowned for her pioneering research and dedication to improving healthcare systems, workforce development, and evidence-based nursing practices. She has made a significant impact on national and international health policy, advocating for the vital role of nurses in transforming healthcare and ensuring better outcomes for patients.

I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition, being a nurse has afforded me an incredibly privileged career. It has tested me to the utmost of my abilities and stretched me in directions I could never dream of. It’s high-powered, high pressured and I’ve met the most incredible people along the way, people that I share this recognition with today. Nursing and healthcare are team efforts, and this honour reflects the collective impact we can make together.

Passionate about tackling inequalities and improving healthcare for patients and workers, Professor Rafferty has recently been exploring nurse-led innovations during COVID; the psychological impact of COVID-19 pandemic on NHS; the impact of improving work environments on the mental health of doctors and nurses across Europe; the role of professional judgement on shaping nurse staffing systems; protecting older people and the care workforce in care homes from COVID-19.

She has had a long and impactful career in nursing, previously working with Lord Ara Darzi and Professor Dame Christine Beasley on the Next Stage Review of the NHS; she served on the Prime Minister’s Commission on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery 2009-10; and has been recipient of various awards including a CBE for services to healthcare in 2008, the Nursing Times Leadership Award in 2014 and Health Services Journal Top 100 Clinical Leaders Award in 2015; Fellowships of the Royal College of Nursing, American Academy of Nursing, Academy of Medical Sciences UK and National Academy of Medicine, USA
