A record-breaking 107 intellectual property rights (IPRs) were filed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in 2022. The institute has submitted the most IPRs (107) in its history for the second year in a row. There were 107 IPRs filed, and among them were 80 patents, 23 design registrations, 2 copyright applications, 1 trademark application, and 1 US patent application.

Filed patents

The discoveries covered by the patents came from a variety of fields, including nanotechnology and medical technology, which includes a number of healthcare solutions such drug delivery systems based on plants that are commonly used in traditional medicine to treat broken and ill bones. Other patents submitted this year covered the disease-modifying drug combinations for the treatment of osteoarthritis, an Optimized Transgene for an eye gene therapy, an electrochemical system for glucose measurement, among others.

We are happy to continue the tradition by submitting 107-100+ IPRs in our institute’s history for two consecutive years, said Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Director of IIT Kanpur. This demonstrates the institute’s R&D activities have grown exponentially, and the research areas have become more diverse. Our faculty, researchers, and students are dedicated to participating in insightful discussions that may lead to significant discoveries that have the potential to help create an Atmanirbhar Bharat across sectors.

An Increase in IPRs.

According to IANS, the institute has seen a significant increase in the number of IPRs given during the year. The 95 such granted patents include, to name a few, a Vermi-Bed method for plants in high altitude areas, a solar energy-based Root Zone Heating system, a tactile haptic smartwatch for the blind and visually impaired, and water quality monitoring inventions like a dry and compact water purification vessel, E.coli water testing kit. Bhu-Parikshak, a soil testing equipment developed by IIT Kanpur, received attention after winning the STEM Benefit Awards 2022 for effective technology transfer that has a socioeconomic impact.
