IIT Madras Identifies Residential Houses, Microplastics Pollution: Click here to know about this Great Innovation

According to the IIT Madras:
“In a word of caution on the burgeoning microplastic pollution, a first-of-its-kind review by IIT Madras found residential buildings to be a major point source causing it. The study also details the toxicity effects of these microplastics in aquatic organisms & human beings”.
This is really a very great initiative by the IIT Madras as Microplastics which are also called as MPs are regarded as a global issue due to their toxicity effects on aquatic organisms & human beings.
As we all know that fish is a vital origin of human protein which is necessary for body growth for all ages of humans. Contamination of fish by MPs is a major hazard that requires special focus and needs to be stopped as soon as possible.
How are Microplastics harming the world?
Microplastics which are also known as MPs are tiny plastic pieces less than 5 millimetres across. And you all must know that MPs are found in the deepest parts of the planet, like the Mariana Trench, and at the top of Mount Everest so how can we not say that they are not in our bodies. Humans may experience oxidative stress, immune system disruption, cytotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and transfer of MPs to other tissues after being exposed to them.
They are released into the environment from various means and some of the most frequent method through which these Microplastics came into the nature are mentioned below:
- Industries
- Wastewater treatment plants
- Plastic bags
- Synthetic clothing
- Everyday plastic items
- Plastic degradation
- Polystyrene foam
- Disposable plastic items
- Beauty products with microbeads
How Do Fish React to the Toxicity of Microplastics?
According to many researchers:
The negative consequences of microplastics on species which can vary from interruption of biological functions to death. It means that it is a direct death the human beings are itself creating. Not only this but MPs are causing detrimental effects on species which are outlined to provide a solid research foundation for sustainable MPs toxicological investigations and to evaluate the potential for huge ecological disruption.
Depending on the nature of MPs, after intake further the MPs poisoning are categorised as follows:
- Disrupting organisms energy transfer, release as pseudofeces.
- Build-up in the gastrointestinal tract
- Producing physical harm such as blockage and damage
- Transfer inside the body
- Exposing inner organs and tissues to MPs.
- City dust
- Marine coatings
- Personal care products
- Fabrics and textiles
- Engineered plastic pellets
- Fibres and plastics in cementitious systems
- Paints
- Tires and roads
Some of the ways through which one can reduce this spreading of Microplastics are mentioned below:
- Using public or alternative transportation
- Not microwaving your food in plastic
- Buying plastic-free cosmetics
- Avoiding single-use plastics
- Regularly dusting and vacuuming
- Buying organic clothes
- Reducing shellfish consumption
And do you all know how much microplastics are in our homes? As in our daily lives plastic filters for washing machines. Hence, the measurement indicated that the family are likely each breathing in between 2,000–7,000 microplastics per day.
Hence, microplastics can float in the water column, settle into marine sediments, or be consumed by organisms, enter the marine food web and are found globally in the marine environment at all depths, remote locations such as Arctic sea ice and also in coastal areas.
