In order to support the marketing of rural artisans’ goods and empower them, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) and the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design (IICD), Jaipur, struck an agreement.

A R Harish, dean of Research and Development at IIT Kanpur, and Toolika Gupta, director of IICD, signed the contract. The deal intends to promote cooperation and open doors for rural craftspeople.

A group of potters from Bithoor will be chosen by the partnership in the beginning. The project will afterwards gradually include a variety of goods created in accordance with the One District One Product (ODOP) plan.

IITK and IICD will collaborate on cooperative projects, student exchange programmes, and other initiatives to promote design thinking in Uttar Pradesh’s handicraft and handcrafted goods industry. By utilising the knowledge and resources of both institutions, the initiative aims to promote a design-thinking culture among the state’s craft groups and craftspeople.

The relationship between IIT Kanpur and IICD will aid in the marketing of regional and rural goods. The collaboration’s main goal is the preservation of traditional art and artisan forms. It will concentrate on developing cutting-edge designs for locally produced goods and forge close links between makers, craft communities, and customers.

In 2021, the Ranjit Singh RoziShiksha Kendra (RSK), which will be based at IIT Kanpur, will be founded. It will be in charge of implementing the goals set forth in the contract. An IITK alumnus named Ranjit Singh and his wife, Martha Carreno, founded the RSK. According to the institute, the centre educates and supports rural youth entrepreneurs so they may create high-quality goods like clothing, bags, potlis and pouches, clay pottery, and ready-to-eat foods.

“We are excited to work together on this revolutionary project with the Indian Institute of Crafts and Design, Jaipur. Our goal is to empower rural craftsmen, protect traditional art forms, and produce commercial goods by fusing our knowledge of research, design, and development with their extensive history in the crafts and design industry. According to A R Harish, dean of Research and growth at IIT Kanpur, “We anticipate that this relationship would significantly advance the socioeconomic growth of Uttar Pradesh.
