The Central Government informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, December 14, that around 33% of seats are open in undergraduate (UG) programmes at engineering institutes nationwide.
The Central Government informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, December 14, that around 33% of seats are open in undergraduate (UG) programmes at engineering institutes nationwide. Dr. Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, provided information on the total authorised intake and open seats at undergraduate engineering institutes for the previous five years in response to a question posed by Dr. K. Keshava Rao in the Upper House.
The undergraduate engineering institutes have admitted a total of 12,53,337 applicants, whereas 4,21,203 seats remain unfilled for the 2021–22 academic year, according to Dr. Subhas Sarkar’s statistics.

The filling up of seats in engineering institutes depends on the demand-supply situation, which depends on the location of the institutes, academic and infrastructure facilities therein, and the placement opportunities, Dr. Subhas Sarkar said in response to a question about the reasons why seats remain vacant.
