University of Texas Philosophy Graduate Program Climbs to No. 8 in National Rankings

The new rankings were published earlier this month in the Philosophical Gourmet Report — the pre-eminent ranking of philosophy graduate programs — and are based on reputational surveys completed by 192 philosophers throughout the English-speaking world and continental Europe.
“Breaking into the top 10 is no small feat, and the Department of Philosophy is honored by the discipline’s recognition of our excellence,” says philosophy professor and department chair David Sosa. “Our hiring, promotion, and retention have been, for over a decade, the best in the field, and our faculty is remarkably strong. We are proud to offer undergraduate education and a Ph.D. program staffed by such a distinguished group of scholars. We now have a top-5 ranking in our sights!”
In addition to being ranked at number eight in the U.S. overall (and number 10 in the English-speaking world), the philosophy graduate program also tied for 3rd place in epistemology and in normative ethics; for 4th in philosophy of language and in Chinese philosophy; and for 1st in history of analytic philosophy.
“These rankings are an incredible achievement and reflect the world-class scholarship of our faculty and students,” says College of Liberal Arts Dean Ann Huff Stevens. “The college is committed to attracting top-tier intellectual talent and fostering impactful academic inquiry and we’re pleased to see the Department of Philosophy recognized for its stellar work.”
