Tsinghua University Hosts 2024 Exchange Conference on Scientific Research and Innovation

Tsinghua News Network, January 6 (Reporter Xu Ziyue Liu Shutian Photographer Yang Yanbin ) On the afternoon of January 2, the 2024 Tsinghua University Research and Innovation Work Exchange Meeting was held in the new building of the School of Economics and Management. The meeting summarized and reviewed the school’s research highlights and research innovation experience in 2024 in the form of round-table discussions and work sharing, and looked forward to the direction of research development. President Li Luming, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the University Guo Yong, and Vice President Zeng Rong attended the meeting, and the Dean of the Research Institute Liu Yiqun presided over the meeting.

Li Luming expressed his gratitude to all the teachers who supported the school’s scientific research and achieved outstanding scientific research results. He pointed out that the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee emphasized “optimizing the organizational mechanism of major scientific and technological innovation and comprehensively strengthening the key core technology research”, which provided important guidance for high-level research universities to do a good job in scientific research and innovation. In view of the challenges currently faced by the school’s scientific research and innovation work, it is necessary to continuously strengthen the strategic layout of original and disruptive technologies, strengthen the ability to mobilize organized scientific research forces to solve major national needs, continuously optimize the layout of scientific research, gather strength to enhance the global influence of key research fields, improve the thinking and understanding of the disruptive path of scientific research, and strive to create a new situation for international scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation.

Li Luming emphasized that to build a world-class university, it is necessary to combine serving the country’s scientific and technological self-reliance with the fundamental task of cultivating outstanding innovative talents. We must adhere to Tsinghua University’s glorious tradition of “reaching the sky”, “standing on the ground” and “cultivating people” in scientific research, and thoroughly implement the spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee, the National Education Conference, and the National Science and Technology Conference. We must effectively implement the transformation of scientific research advantages into advantages in discipline development and talent cultivation, take serving national development as the fundamental orientation of discipline construction, accelerate the construction of world-class universities and advantageous disciplines with Chinese characteristics, integrate scientific research and education throughout the entire scientific research process, comprehensively enhance the ability to cultivate high-level talents, and form a good pattern of “producing both first-class results and first-class talents”, and strive to make new and greater contributions to building a strong country in education, science and technology, and talents.

Zeng Rong delivered a work report entitled “Building a university innovation system to support the construction of a strong country in science and technology”. He reviewed the school’s work achievements in 2024 in promoting high-quality development of basic research, solidly advancing key core technology research, promoting global scientific and technological progress through high-level open cooperation, building a platform for gathering high-level innovative talents, and prospering the humanities and social sciences. He also put forward prospects for the work to be carried out in 2025 in improving the basic research support and achievement evaluation mechanism, optimizing the organizational mechanism for major scientific and technological innovation, and promoting the construction of liberal arts.

Academician Zhang Jianmin, professor of the School of Civil Engineering and Water Conservancy, Academician Wu Jianping, professor of the Department of Computer Science, Professor Lu Xinchun, professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Associate Professor Wang Yiguo of the School of Life Sciences, and Professor Li Daokui of the School of Social Sciences gave speeches on the topics of “Innovative development of large-scale engineering disciplines going to sea – challenges and opportunities of marine smart equipment for our school’s scientific research layout”, “Serving national needs and conquering core Internet technologies in an organized manner”, “The path to independent and controllable development of chemical mechanical polishing equipment”, “Hormone and health and disease” and “How to establish an independent knowledge system of philosophy and social sciences? Tsinghua’s exploration of economics”.

Roundtable

Academician He Kebin, Dean of the Carbon Neutrality Research Institute, Professor Zhang Linqi of the School of Basic Medicine, Xu Ruina, Director of the Department of Energy and Power Engineering, and Professor Guan Dabo of the Department of Earth Sciences held a roundtable discussion on the theme of “Striving to build international multilateral cooperation and deeply participate in global science and technology governance”, and talked about the experience and practices in international multilateral cooperation and their prospects for the future. The roundtable meeting was hosted by Wang Xiaonan, Associate Professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering.
