“Seminar at AMU Explores the Role of Languages in Nation-Building”

Aligarh : The Department of Linguistics at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), in collaboration with the Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, Ministry of Education, Government of India, organised a one-day seminar titled “The Role of Languages in the Development of the Nation” at the Faculty of Arts Lounge today.

Delivering the inaugural address as the Chief Guest, Vice-Chancellor of AMU, Professor Naima Khatoon congratulated the Department of Linguistics on its academic achievements. She highlighted the pivotal role of language in cognitive growth, personal identity, and national development, describing it as a catalyst for innovation and progress. She emphasised the importance of collective knowledge to propel national advancement.

Guest of Honour, Professor Rizwan Khan from the Department of English, lauded the Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti for its partnership in organising the event. He praised Professor Warsi and his team for their initiative and highlighted the unifying role of language in governance, societal identity, and academic progress.

In a video address, Padmashree Chamu Krishna Shastri, Chairman of the Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti, emphasised the Prime Minister’s vision of elevating the status of mother tongues to foster unity. He elaborated on the NEP 2020’s focus on Indian languages in education and the government’s efforts to make learning materials accessible in all 22 official languages. Referring to the 2011 Census, he celebrated India’s rich linguistic diversity, encompassing classical, regional, tribal, and minority languages.

In his welcome address, Professor M.J. Warsi, Chairman of the Department of Linguistics, expressed his gratitude to AMU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Naima Khatoon, for her unwavering support and welcomed the distinguished delegates and scholars in attendance. He highlighted the transformative role of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in promoting Indian languages and hoped the seminar would foster meaningful discussions.

Professor Shantanu Ghosh, Director of the Amity Institute of English and Research, in his keynote address, highlighted the intrinsic connection between language and national identity. While acknowledging the widespread use of English in India, he advocated for flexibility in students’ language preferences. Professor R.C. Sharma, formerly of the University of Delhi, applauded the Bhartiya Bhasha Samiti’s efforts to elevate Indian languages, stressing their role in fostering literacy and empowerment.

Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor T.N. Satheesan, observed that language transcends communication and reflects cultural heritage.

Guest of Honour, Mr. Masood Ali Beg, emphasised the need to integrate language into key domains, especially education, to preserve its cultural essence.

The seminar proceedings were conducted by Dr. Mehvish Mohsin, and the event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Pallav Vishnu.
