Queen Mary’s Institute of Dentistry Awarded Athena Swan Silver for Gender Equality Efforts

The Athena Swan Charter is a framework which is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education (HE) and research. Established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment, the Charter is now being used across the globe to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

Professor Aylin Baysan, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Lead and Professor of Cariology in relation to Minimally Invasive Dentistry (MID), said: “This award is a testament to the hard work and commitment of our team in creating a more inclusive and equitable environment at the Institute of Dentistry. We are proud of the progress we have made and recognise that this is an ongoing journey. Therefore, we remain committed to taking meaningful action to ensure that every individual feels valued, supported, and empowered to thrive. Through continuous reflection, collaboration, and tangible initiatives, we strive to create an environment where diversity is celebrated, equity is prioritised, and everyone has the opportunity to flourish.”
