NRSMCH Kolkata alumni will help one of India’s oldest medical colleges compete with the best in the world.

The Nil Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College’s graduates pooled their funds in February to purchase a high-end smart board for Rs. 2.75 lakhs. Since then, it has been the subject of all theoretical classes for all years.

They’ll be giving five additional gifts very soon. The medical college and its more than 1,500 graduates, who are dispersed across the globe, are hoping that this is the beginning of a long-lasting engagement.

“There is a rise in alumni participation in the 150th-year wave. There are numerous contributions being made. The involvement of the alumni inspires the current students and makes them feel like they are a part of the NRS family. The relationship gets closer, according to Pit Baran Chakraborty, principal at NRS.

NRS Medical College is one of the nation’s oldest medical schools; it was founded as Sealdah Medical School in 1873. The NRSMC has established a 150-years celebration committee, which is made up of alumni, the college chairman and the principal, to commemorate the institution’s 150th anniversary. They hope to provide scholarships, support NRS grads studying in the United Kingdom, and contribute a robot and pediatric cancer beds, together with other alumni they have been able to rally.

Study Abroad, Scholarships, And MBBS Costs

In order to support NRS graduates moving to the UK for study or employment, the alumni in India are also attempting to mobilize support from their counterparts in the UK. “We are attempting to create platforms with the UK alumni where they can receive all kinds of help. Dr Saurav Dutta, a medical oncologist and NRS alumnus, said that helping the college grow goes beyond just donating equipment or buying a building. “Our alumni will extend support to NRS alumni who want to go to the UK, help them get a job or do a course,” he added.

The alumni are thinking about offering scholarships to students from really underprivileged families. The princely sum of Rs. 12 is the monthly fee at NRS, but adding in the expenditures for board, food, and other miscellaneous items greatly increases the costs.

“We’re considering helping these students. Up to Rs. 10,000 must be spent by a student each month for onboarding costs. Tuphan Kanti Dolai, head of hematology at NRS Medical College, said, “We will therefore identify those who are coming from the poorest circumstances and support them with scholarships. He graduated as well. “We desire that NRS rank among the top medical schools in the world. Every single alum should hear this message so they can support the college.

Exhibitions and Stamps

According to Dutta, the alumni have also requested in writing from the principle 500 square feet for a museum honoring the notables connected to the college.
The museum will highlight the accomplishments of the medical faculty at Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College, notably Upendranath Brahmachari, who in 1920 devised a treatment for visceral leishmaniasis or Kala-azar (black fever). As the college’s first doctor, Brahmachari joined NRS to teach when it was still known as Campbell Medical School. He worked there for 20 years.

The museum will also feature the work of Dr. Subhash Mukhapadhyay, who succeeded in producing a test-tube baby for the first time in India and just the second time worldwide but who was not given the credit he deserved.

Hematology, Paediatrics, and Robot

Dutta regrets that the current group of alumni may not have the resources to fund the robot that the alumni group wishes to give to the college. “Neither our college nor any of the government medical colleges in Kolkata have robots, and neither do we. But we ought to be able to make a contribution to that.

Departments Of Medical Colleges

The committee members believe that the hospital needs two extra departments, one for infectious diseases and the other for genetic diseases. The government has already received a proposal from them. Additionally, the West Bengal government assisted the institute in developing an integrated software system that would soon begin to operate. Online prescription ordering will be possible. “We want the hospital’s general operations to be conducted online. Online access to investigation results and discharge summaries should be available to patients, according to Dolai.
