NMC Requests Details of Fellowships for FMGs Before Granting Temporary Registration To Practitioners

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has requested that medical colleges and institutes post information about their fellowship programmes for international medical graduates on their official websites, including the course content, duration, cost, and other facts.

These specifics will be checked while the applications for temporary registration of the FMGs are being processed by the NMC’s Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRC).

The “Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practise Medicine Regulation 2023” was cited by NMC as having provisions for granting foreign nationals a fellowship, clinical training, clinical research, or observership. According to the regulations, FMGs may be permitted to receive clinical training in India to advance their abilities at any institution.

The NMC stated and requested medical colleges to have the following information available at the time of processing the registration application: “In view of the above, it should be ensured in order to speed the process of prompt issuance of temporary registration to foreign medical practitioners.

According to the commission, the temporary registration will not be granted on time if the necessary information is not provided. A 12-month maximum registration term will be offered, followed by a 12-month cooling-off period.

The National Medical Commission Act, 2019, an act of Parliament, established the NMC, and it went into effect on September 25, 2020, according to a gazette announcement published on April 9, 2020. The Board of Governors established under section 3A of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 as the successor to the Medical Council of India, was subsequently abolished.
