IIT Madras to open its first offshore campus on October, 2023 in Tanzania;

The first offshore campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will be established in Zanzibar, Tanzania. IIT Madras intends to begin programmes in October 2023 at the projected IIT-M campus in Tanzania. On Wednesday, an agreement was signed between the ministry of education (MoE), Government of India, IIT Madras, and the ministry of education and vocational training (MoEVT) Zanzibar- Tanzania to establish an IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar- Tanzania.
The agreement was signed in the presence of HE Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, and S Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister.
“This campus reflects India and Tanzania’s longstanding friendship and serves as a reminder of India’s commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties across Africa and the Global South,” according to an official statement. “This unique partnership will bring IITM’s top-ranked educational expertise to a prime destination in Africa and serve the region’s critical current needs,” it stated. The new IIT campus abroad will also strengthen research collaborations with other world-class academic institutions.
“Students enrolled at this campus will be awarded IIT Madras degrees.” The cutting-edge interdisciplinary degrees are expected to attract a broad cohort of students from Africa and other nations. “Indian students are also eligible to apply to these programmes,” according to the announcement.
IIT Madras will design the academic programmes, curriculum, student selection criteria, and pedagogical details, while the government of Zanzibar-Tanzania will cover the capital and operating costs.
The institute further stated that the offshore campus will improve the quality of IIT Madras education and research due to the diversity of students and faculty. In February of this year, a delegation of five professors from IIT Madras travelled to Tanzania to discuss the establishment of an offshore school in Africa.
