IIT Madras’ first International Campus at Zanzibar

IIT Madras has opened its first international campus in Zanzibar, this is a historic moment for our country. This initiative was taken by the Indian government to ensure that the top-quality education system of India reaches international areas. 

This inauguration of IIT Madras is the first campus of the Indian Institute of Technology to be opened abroad. The campus is located in the Bweleo district, close to Zanzibar town. The government of India and Zanzibar have also made plans for another permanent campus to be built jointly. The selection process would be guided by IIT Madras’ Office of Global Management. It will include a screening test and an interview to maintain the institution’s academic standards abroad.

The inauguration ceremony was held today, on November 7. The inauguration ceremony of IITM Zanzibar was led by Zanzibar President and chairman of the revolutionary council Hussein Ali Mwinyi in the Zanzibar campus itself. The event was attended by various Tanzanian officials, Indian dignitaries, faculty, and students. IIT Madras’ Director Prof. V Kamakoti saw the inauguration virtually. He added, ‘The new campus is like a journey of knowledge and innovation that transcends borders.’

As informed in an official statement by IIT Madras, students in the first batch 40% of them are women. IIT-Madras Zanzibar will offer Bachelor’s and Master’s level programs in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The students in the inaugural batch consist of students from Zanzibar, mainland Tanzania, Nepal, and India. 

The Zanzibar campus would offer academic collaborations. Study abroad programs and internships will always benefit the students. The university is available for students of all nationalities.

IIT Madras Campus 

IIT Madras is among the eight public institutes of Eminence in India. IITM was ranked 1st in the overall category in India by the National Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2023. It was also ranked 1st among government engineering colleges by Outlook India. 

While internationally IITM was ranked 250 in the QS World University Rankings of 2023. It provides UG, PG, and doctoral-level courses, it admits students through entrance exams like JEE, GATE, CAT, and JAM, and its own written entrance test.

It is known for its Quality Improvement Program (QIP), which is sponsored by AICTE. Its campus is spread over about 617 acres of area and has a total of 16 departments. There are 100+ courses which allow students to specify their areas of interest. Some popular programs at IIT Madras are BTech, MTech, MSc., and various integrated degrees as well.
