Dancing Through Tradition: Sattriya Summer Camp at Parijat Academy, Guwahati

Today, in Pamohi, Guwahati, a summer camp organized by Parijat Academy is taking place, where participants are being trained in the art of Sattriya dance. Sattriya is a traditional classical dance form that originates from the northeastern Indian state of Assam. It is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the region and holds significant historical and spiritual importance.
The summer camp provides a unique opportunity for individuals, young and old, to immerse themselves in the rich cultural experience of Sattriya dance. Students and enthusiasts of all levels, from beginners to more experienced dancers, have gathered to learn and appreciate the intricate movements, gestures, and expressions that characterize this beautiful dance form.
Sattriya dance is known for its graceful and expressive style, often incorporating storytelling elements from Hindu mythology. The dance form was introduced in the 15th century by the revered Assamese saint, scholar, and reformer, Srimanta Sankardev. Since then, it has been passed down through generations, preserving its authenticity and traditional charm.
The summer camp is led by experienced Sattriya dance teachers, who themselves are experts in the art form. They not only teach the technical aspects of the dance but also provide insights into the historical and cultural significance of Sattriya, adding a holistic dimension to the learning experience.
Throughout the camp, participants will undergo rigorous training sessions, where they will learn various ‘mati akhara’ (footwork patterns), ‘hastamudras’ (hand gestures), and ‘bhangis’ (stances). They will also be exposed to the complexities of rhythmic patterns and the elaborate facial expressions that are an essential part of Sattriya dance.
Beyond the physical training, the camp fosters a sense of camaraderie among the participants, providing a platform for cultural exchange and networking among individuals who share a passion for the art. The immersive experience not only helps participants build a strong foundation in Sattriya dance but also allows them to appreciate and understand the cultural heritage of Assam better.
At the end of the summer camp, there may be a performance showcase where the participants can demonstrate their newly acquired skills in front of an audience. Such events not only boost the confidence of the learners but also promote the appreciation and preservation of this ancient dance form.
