What is MBBS?

MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery)is the primary undergraduate medical course granted by medical colleges. MBBS is 5 years and 6 months undergraduate medical course. Doctor of Medicine, formerly known as MD, is a postgraduate degree program where graduates study medicine in detail. MD is a two-year course that educates medical graduates in the study, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases.

MBBS VS MD Admission in India 2022:-

One should know the basic difference between the admission process of MBBS vs MD. In India, there are around 554 top medical colleges in India which offers MBBS courses to medical aspirants. Earlier for taking medical admission, aspirants have to clear NEET and admission to All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) were through the latter’s own examinations. However, from the year 2020 onwards, the undergraduate medical entrance examinations for all medical colleges, including the AIIMS and JIPMER were scrapped and now granted through NEET only. The duration of the MBBS course was earlier five and a half years which has now been reduced to four years and two months. 

However, for postgraduate degree programs, it is essential for aspirants to know that MD and MS (Master of Surgery) are the most sought after in this category, as many of the graduates wish to pursue this category. These courses are offered to aspirants after the successful completion of their MBBS course. Admission to the MD course is done based on the NEET PG exam and INI CET exam. MBBS VS MD Course Fees 2022:-

  • From 2020, NEET is the only UG-level medical entrance examination for the aspirants willing to preform medicine. Previously, there were several state-level exams for which aspirants had to appear to get entrance to medical and dental colleges. But as of now, NEET is the only UG-level medical entrance examination.
  • Also, earlier private medical colleges use to charge a huge amount of fees for admission into the top medical college. To have control over this, authorities have made it necessary for both the government as well as private medical colleges to disclose their fee for the courses. 
  • This enables aspirants to have clarity of every detail related to their admissions. The fees of the MBBS course vary between all the government-aided institutions/ government/central colleges and deemed universities/private colleges.
  • MD course fee differs greatly. As the fees of government colleges are relatively very low than the private ones. However, within these private and government colleges also as the fee may differ from one institute to another.
  • In the USA, the duration of MD/DO is a four-years and is divided into two parts: pre-clinical and clinical. The pre-clinical program includes courses in basic sciences and the clinical courses consist of clinical rotation. 
  • There is also a residency program after the MD course after which an aspirant is eligible to practice medicine in the USA. The residency programs for different specialties are different. It can range from 3 years for internal medicine and pediatrics to 5 years in general surgery, while the residency program for neurosurgery is 7 years.
