About TNAU
An agricultural school was founded at Saidapet, Madras, Tamil Nadu, in 1868 that eventually moved to Coimbatore to become the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). It was connected to Madras University in 1920.
By providing research outputs, TNAU assisted the State Agricultural Department and took on full responsibility for Agricultural Education and Research.
The sole institution for agricultural education in all of South India up until 1946 was the Agricultural College and Research Institute in Coimbatore.
It was acknowledged as a post-graduate centre awarding master’s and doctoral degrees in 1958. In 1965, the Agricultural College and Research Institute of Madurai was founded.
When the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University was founded in 1971, these two colleges served as its foundation.
