The National Medical Council (NMC) published internship guidelines in July for medical students who had previously been studying abroad but had returned to India as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. After passing the Foreign Medical Graduate Exam, the students were told to do a two-year mandatory rotational medical internship instead of the customary one year internship (FMGE).

The internship portion of the course, which students would have missed owing to the Covid 19-imposed lockdown, would be made up by an additional year, it was claimed. ‘In accordance with standard procedure, we show up for the FMGE in India. We are need to complete an additional year of internship after passing this’, according to a student who wished to remain anonymous, before we are recognised as doctors in India.

“After finishing college, there was no possibility for us to return to China for internships. Another student remarked, “The NMC also published recommendations that medical studies completed in online manner will not be recognised in India.

As a one-time remedy, the Supreme Court ordered the regulating authority to develop a plan in two months to allow MBBS students affected by the epidemic and the Russia-Ukraine war to finish their clinical rotations in medical colleges.

The NMC responded by framing the plan for students who had returned because of the pandemic and by issuing instructions. According to the same, students who have received a certificate from their respective universities attesting to their degree completion on or before June 30, 2022, are eligible to sit for the Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) Exam. The NMC provided this one-time reprieve in response to a Supreme Court decision in this regard, according to Andrew Mathews, president of the Foreign Medical Graduate Parents Association (FMGPA). Students are prepared for two years of internships and are willing to follow NMC’s new rules. But something has to change right now.
