In order to help students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) enter high-tech fields that require professional skills, the US State Department recently launched a one-year professional master’s degree course.
The National Education Policy 2020 of India has been taken into consideration when designing the one-year master’s programme.
Lakhtakia stated during his presentation at the Jefferson Science Fellowship Distinguished Lecture Series: “It is a special project developed at the Bureau of South and Central Asia Affairs especially about opportunities available to US universities as a result of a New Education Policy of India.”
Students can apply for the one-year industrial master’s programme in the USA after completing the four-year bachelor’s curriculum in India.
Akhlesh Lakhtatia, a Jefferson Science Fellow who was given the job by the US State Department, created the initiative. At Evan Pugh University, Lakhtatia teaches.
Study In the US: One-Year Master’s Eligibility
According to the rules, at the conclusion of their third year of study, students enrolled in a four-year bachelor’s degree course at an Indian school may be chosen for the 12-month professional master’s. The twelve months will be spent at a university in the US.
The student’s grade point average (GPA) at the conclusion of the third academic year must be higher than 3.0 on a 4-point scale in order for them to be considered. The fourth year should also include at least two elective courses that are taught in on-campus classrooms and laboratories.
Electives That are Offered Online or Through Distance Learning Modalities Are Not Eligible.
The student must submit an F-1 visa application to a US Consulate in India shortly after being chosen. In order to “avoid last-minute visa-related hassles,” according to Lakhtatia in the lecture, applications are being assessed a year before the start of the 12-month professional master’s degree programme in the US.
The student enrols in a 12-month professional master’s degree programme at a US university campus after completing the bachelor’s degree programme. The curriculum will include lectures, practical laboratory sessions, and workshop activities.
The students will work on projects that are applicable to the industry before earning their professional master’s degree.
Fees for Master’s Programmes In the US
The professional master’s degree will guarantee admission to the students chosen in the third year of their bachelor’s degree programme, but they must fulfil the minimal requirements in the fourth year.
The fourth-year courses that will be accepted for entry into the professional master’s degree programme will be developed in collaboration between Indian and US universities.
Although the project opens up the possibility of policy-level twinning, it is not a study abroad fellowship. The chosen student would be required to pay the full tuition for both the programme at the US university and the fourth year at the Indian institution. Additionally, the student will be responsible for covering all living, health care, and transport costs to the US school.
Professional Master’s Degree: Study Abroad
After finishing the one-year professional master’s degree, a student may apply for a three-year extension of the optional practical training programme in order to get experience working in a US industrial facility.
The industrial establishment will also provide the student with a wage. When talking about the demand for high-tech manufacturing competence in the US, the need for such a course became apparent.
“We need a lot of highly skilled individuals in the high-tech field. They don’t require a doctorate, which is not crucial; instead, they need high-tech abilities, which are often learned at the master’s level in an intensive 12-month curriculum, according to Lakhtatia.
The Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme has been extended by the US government for three years.
