The visit of the students from Ranchi’s Institute of Legal Studies to Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar, Ranchi, as part of the legal aid competition, proved to be a highly significant and enlightening experience for both the students and the inmates. The primary aim of this visit was to raise awareness about the crucial role of legal aid and to develop a deeper understanding of the various challenges confronted by prisoners within the criminal justice system. Among the participating students were Nidhi Prabha, Usha Pandey, Ritika Anand, Adarsh Prem, Garima Pandey, Ambesh Choubey, Kumar Yash, Rakhee Kumari, Kumar Raushan, Akshat Parasar and Sanjukta Banerjee.

Legal aid is a fundamental right that ensures access to justice for all, regardless of their socio-economic status. It is especially crucial for those who cannot afford legal representation and might be at a disadvantage during legal proceedings. By visiting the jail and interacting with both the jailers and the inmates, the students were able to witness firsthand the realities of the criminal justice system and its impact on the lives of those incarcerated.

During their visit, the students had the opportunity to engage in conversations with the jailers, who play a critical role in maintaining order and security within the prison. This allowed the students to gain insights into the challenges faced by the prison staff, the constraints they encounter, and the importance of upholding the rights and dignity of prisoners.

However, the most impactful aspect of the visit was the opportunity to converse with the inmates themselves. By speaking directly with the culprits, the students got a chance to understand their perspectives, personal experiences, and the struggles they faced in navigating the legal process. These interactions humanized the incarcerated individuals, breaking down stereotypes and fostering empathy among the students.

The students had the chance to explain the value of legal aid to the inmates, emphasizing that it is not only about offering legal representation but also about ensuring that everyone’s rights are protected and that justice is served fairly. They could provide information about various legal aid services available to prisoners and how to access them. By doing so, the students aimed to empower the inmates with knowledge and resources that could potentially aid them in seeking justice and improving their lives within the prison environment.

Through this visit, the students from the Institute of Legal Studies were able to witness the transformative power of legal aid and its potential to make a positive impact on the lives of those entangled in the criminal justice system. It also served as a reminder of the importance of social responsibility for future legal practitioners and encouraged them to advocate for equal access to justice for all members of society.
