As of September 2023, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a list of bogus universities broken down by state. The statutory authority has instructed each state’s Department of Higher Education and principle secretaries to take “appropriate action” against any fraudulent schools operating inside its borders.

Institutions from a number of states, including Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, are included on the UGC’s list of fraudulent colleges.

Delhi, which has eight fraudulent institutions, and Uttar Pradesh, which has four, have the largest percentages of the 20 universities that have been marked as not being recognised.

The University Grants Commission Act of 1956 is being violated in a total of 8 states by phoney universities. Each of Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal has two fictitious universities.

“The right of conferring or granting degrees shall be exercised only by a University established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act, a State Act, or an institution deemed to be a University under section 3 or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer or grant degrees,” states the UGC Act of 1956.

Education officials are advising students and parents to visit the UGC’s official website for detailed information on recognised institutions as well as, more crucially, to detect and avoid fraudulent institutions before considering admission for higher education in order to protect their interests.

This proactive step aims to shield students from falling prey to unethical practises in the educational industry while ensuring that they make informed decisions and seek legitimate educational options.

The UGC has stated in its official notice, “UGC letters to State Government’s Department of Higher Education / Principal Secretaries to take appropriate action against the fake Institutions in the respective state.
