Protests End in BHU: Administration Strengthens Security

On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, a horrible incident happened with a girl who was out on that night with her friend. Three boys riding a motorbike misbehaved with the girl.

The Incident resulted in an enormous uproar among the students.

Following the demands of students and the security of girls, administrators have taken immediate measures to ensure the safety of students on campus.

Shocking Incident at BHU Campus

According to the report filed by the victim, she went out on Wednesday night with her friend. They were around Karman Baba temple when three men came by motorcycle and forcibly took her towards the corner, separating her from her friend and gagging her.

The accused then stripped her, took photos, and even made videos of her. They let her go after 15 minutes and by taking her number as well.

In the wake of this, hundreds of students protested in front of Rajputana Hostel on Thursday. Students also informed that outsiders were involved in this incident and that molestation and assaults have become common these days. The student body chanted slogans and raised questions against the university’s director. They raised messages like, ‘Why is the director silent?’, ‘We want justice’, ‘Are we safe?’. 

The students have demanded extra security and for outsiders to be banned.

Immediate meeting by BHU and IIT BHU Administrators

On Sunday, November 5 a joint meeting between BHU and IIT BHU to strengthen campus security. The meeting lasted for more than three hours and the administrations expressed strong commitment to ensure the peaceful leaving of the entire campus.The meeting was attended by Prof. 

Sudhir Kumar Jain (vice-chancellor), Pramod Kumar Jain (Director, IIT BHU), and other officials had the following discussions:

  1. CCTV surveillance facility was discussed. The Varanasi Smart City Limited has already conducted an initial survey in this regard.
  2. Campus street lighting is being improved immediately. The work is in progress and the upcoming 2-3 days there will be proper lighting in the entire campus.
  3. Campus security check posts are being strengthened and strict enforcement of security protocol is being ensured 24/7.
  4. All seven gates of campus will be under stern check after 10:00 p.m. to 05:00 a.m. to restrict the entry of any anti-social elements. 
  5. Both IIT BHU and BHU will have a women’s grievance cell. Both the institutions will work to strengthen their respective cells and more participation from the students will be encouraged. They will also review the GSCASH provision within seven days and see what improvements are needed in the function of the Women Grievance Cell.
  6. A joint committee of both institutions is also formed to ensure safe environments for the students on the campus. The committee will directly report to the heads of institutions. The committee chairman is Prof. Royana Singh (dept. Of Anatomy, IMS) and the co-chairman is Prof. Rajesh Kumar Upadhyay (chemical engineering, IIT BHU).

The University has requested that every student and community of the entire campus cooperate on the above-mentioned rules.
