PM Modi Announces “National Space Day” For August 23 To Mark Chandrayaan-3’s Touchdown

PM Modi announces "National Space Day" for August 23 to Mark Chandrayaan-3's Touchdown

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared August 23 to be National Space Day in honour of the success of Chandrayaan 3’s Moon mission. While addressing the scientists of the Indian Space Research Organisation at the ISRO command headquarters in Bengaluru, Modi made his statement.

In order to have a conversation with ISRO scientists about the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew directly from the Greek capital of Athens to Bengaluru on Saturday. He also made an official announcement naming the location where the lander “Vikram” touched down on the lunar surface as “Shiva Shakti Point.”

Noting that women scientists had a significant impact on the Chandrayaan 3 project, He said, “The “Shiv Shakti” point would motivate future generations to employ science for the sake of society.”

The Prime Minister, who became emotional while speaking to the ISRO team at ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) here and lavishly praised them for their commitment and passion, declared August 23, the day the Chandrayaan-3 lander touched down on the surface of the moon, to be observed as “National Space Day”.

He described the achievement of the Chandrayaan-3 mission as an “extraordinary moment” in the history of India’s space programme and said that “Tiranga Point” will be the name of the location where the Chandrayaan-2 lander crashed-landed on the surface of the Moon in 2019.

He was informed about the Chandrayaan-3 mission by ISRO Chairman S. Somanath. A sizable crowd gathered outside the HAL Airport and the nearby Jalahalli Cross to welcome the Prime Minister, many of whom were waving national flags.

Modi virtually joined the ISRO team at Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISTRAC on Wednesday evening when the Lander Module of the Chandrayaan-3 mission safely touched down on the lunar surface while he was in Johannesburg for the 15th BRICS summit.

On the evening of September 6, 2019, Modi had also gone to Bengaluru to witness the anticipated touchdown of the ‘Vikram’ lander from the Chandrayaan-2 mission.

However, early on September 7, just a few minutes before it was supposed to touch down, ISRO lost contact with the probe when it was hovering 2.1 km over the lunar surface.

Thanks to this mission, India is now the first country to get close to the Moon’s south pole and the fourth to successfully land a spacecraft on the moon.

About Chandrayaan 3:

Chandrayaan-3 is made up of an indigenous Lander module (LM), Propulsion module (PM), and Rover with the goal of exploring and exhibiting new technology required for interplanetary missions.

The Rover, which will perform in-motion chemical examination of the lunar surface, will be released after the Lander soft-lands at a selected place on the moon. Both the Lander and the Rover are equipped with scientific payloads that will perform surface testing on the moon.

The primary function of PM is to move the LM from its injection into the launch vehicle to the moon’s final 100 km circular polar orbit before releasing the LM.

In addition, a scientific payload that will function once the Lander Module separates is carried by the Propulsion Module. The launch vehicle for Chandrayaan-3 has been determined to be LVM3 M4, and it will place the integrated module in an elliptical parking orbit (EPO) with a size of roughly 170 x 36500 km.
