On October 26, 2023, while addressing the western zone vice chancellor’s conference at the Maharaja Sayajirao University Baroda, Gujarat, UGC Chairman Mr. Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar announced that over 2 crore students had registered for the commission’s Academic Bank of Credit.

During the establishment of NEP 2020, the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) was one of the most prominent provisions at that time. It is a digital storehouse that contains the credit earned by an individual student throughout their learning journey, including undergraduate and postgraduate. This would allow students to smoothly transfer credit and make students’ lives relatively easier by saving time and money during the process.

By June, the registration count was up to 1 crore on the platform, and from then on, a special ID was made by ABC, which made this compulsory for students while applying to universities.

Digilocker also tweeted about the conference, mentioning that Mr. Mamidala also shared the significance of the Academic Bank of Credit’s record with NEP 2020.

University Grants Commission (UGC) Reforms

The UGC chairman also highlighted the progress of various UGC reforms; he even mentioned that to get results and involvement, it is compulsory for every student to register with the Academic Bank of Credit.

“In the last couple of years, UGC has introduced several reforms. Today, more than two crore students have registered on the ABC platform, but it is not enough, as it is important that all the students are registered on the platform and you upload all the credentials and credit certificates of the students on the ABC platform,” he further added.

What is ABC?

The Academic Bank of Credit was initiated to present a vision of young students opting to go for higher education must have their transactions and credit smoothly. The ABC would deposit the credits awarded to the student while going for their higher education from the registered Higher Education Institutions. This is followed by the proper implementation of guidelines given by UGC.

The NEP 2020’s vision of promoting national development and providing high-quality education among the youth, is one of the most productive reforms generated by UGC till now, its vision is far broader than that of the recent results.
