NMC instructs medical colleges to rectify and ‘strictly’ follow the guidelines

The National Medical Commission (NMC) noted that numerous medical colleges have disregarded the recommendations of programmes for the development of medical faculty by returning to maintaining the same faculty members on their Curriculum Committees (CC) and Medical Education Units (MEU).
In this regard, the NMC has given the medical colleges instructions to make changes and “strictly” adhere to the rules.
The commission reaffirmed that among other responsibilities, the Curriculum Committee (CC) is responsible for overseeing the implementation and monitoring of the curriculum at their colleges, conducting the Curriculum Implementation Support Programme (CISP), and setting the schedule.
On the other hand, the MEU will concentrate on supporting training, running the Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME), and other internal faculty training.
The dean or principal and convener or MEU coordinator are the only members who are eligible to participate in both CC and MEU. The conveners of nodal centres and regional centres have been instructed to monitor compliance with the rules in the designated colleges.
The commission added that until the rules are followed, medical colleges would not be permitted to offer the Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) or the Curriculum Implementation Support Programme (CISP).
It also clarified that as a large number of faculty of medical colleges has to undergo faculty development programme (FDP),“up to 25% of training sections of BCME, CISP-III may be taken by faculty from MEU and CC mutually. This is only an interim measure till January 31, 2024.”
However, medical colleges founded in 2019 or later were granted a one-year extension until July 31, 2024, for the creation of the CC and MEU.
