NITIE Mumbai to become IIM Mumbai; Parliament passes IIM Amendment Bill 2023

The National Institute of Industrial Engineering, also known as NITIE, has renamed to Indian Institute of Management Mumbai. After IIM Nagpur, IIM Mumbai will now be the second IIM in Maharashtra and the twenty-first IIM overall.
As of right now, the institute is listed in the IIM Act’s Schedule. The Indian Institute of Management (Amendment) Bill 2023 has been approved by both houses of parliament, repealing the IIM Act of 2017.
In the NIRF rankings, the institute has already made steady progress, moving up from position 12 in 2017 to position 7 in 2023.
The well-known municipal institute made the much awaited announcement via a tweet that reads, “Both Houses of Parliament has passed IIM (Amendment) Bill 2023. The National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Mumbai – well known for its techno-managerial strength and expertise in Supply Chain and Management, has been included in the Schedule of IIM Act.”
The President of India will be the Visitor of each institute, according the IIM (Amendment) Bill 2023.
“The Visitor may appoint one or more persons to review the work and progress of any institute, to hold enquiries into affairs thereof and to report in such manner as the Visitor may direct. The board may also recommend to the Visitor an enquiry as deemed proper against the institute which has not been functioning in accordance with provisions and objectives of the Act,” the bill said.
To maintain gender diversity on campus, the university recently made a small change to the admission requirements by permitting individuals with a Master of Science (M Sc) in Mathematics and Statistics to apply for the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDIM) programme provided by NITIE, which had previously exclusively admitted engineers.
