From today, August 21, to August 29, all higher education institutions (HEIs) have been asked by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to observe “National Sports Day.” “Sports as an enabler for an inclusive and fit society” is the topic for this year’s festival.

Through a Tweet, the UGC secretary requested that all directors of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), Indian Institutes of Science (IISCs), Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs), and vice chancellors of all central universities conduct a variety of sporting events to promote participation in physical activity.

According to the UGC, Each Organization Is to be Divided into Two, Four, or Six Teams Depending on the Number of Participants, with Both Males and Females Participating in the event.

An official statement from the UGC read, “Medal tally for each team is to be maintained. The highest points team will win Major Dhyan Chand Trophy. Organizations are at liberty to choose games for competition from any popular sports of the locality, depending on the availability of infrastructure. The Names of teams can be based on freedom fighters or prominent sportspersons of the country.”

The University Activity Monitoring Portal (AMP) at uamp.uge.ae.in is where the colleges and universities are required to post the video and images of the events held throughout the National Sports Day week.

A standard operating procedure (SOP) has been provided by UGC for the National Sports Day (NSD) celebrations in 2023. According to the SOP, the HEIs must plan athletic competitions, modern sports, and native sports on their campuses based on age groups. For the sports day, it is recommended that the employees dress in athletic clothes.

Salient features of the event:

  • The organization is able to determine the actual day of the sporting event during the weeklong celebration.
  • The tournament may be built on a turn-based point system, where every team member wins points for the teams regardless of position in the competition, to foster team unity and inclusivity instead of relying on individual players.
  • Recognizing the event’s local sports legends as part of the festivities
  • Preferably, employees should dress for sports when they arrive at work.
  • Along with the NSD logo, sample t-shirt designs will be provided.

The Standard Format of the Event is to be:

  • Each organization will be split into two parts. depending on the number of participants while preserving gender equality, four or six teams
  • Each team’s medal total will be kept track of. The Major Dhyan Chand Trophy will go to the team with the most points.
  • Organisations have the freedom to select games for competition from the most well-liked sports in the area and those with infrastructure.
  •  Teams’ names may be inspired by notable national athletes who were liberation fighters.
