Modern open source software, Koha and DSpace will greatly impact the library system: Speakers at a national workshop at AMU

ALIGARH : “The modern open-space software including Koha and DSpace have the potential to change the very library system and they will greatly enhance the technical expertise of library personnel and the users all over the world,” said Mr Christopher Cormack, the original developer of Koha, while delivering the keynote address online at the inaugural session of a six-day workshop organized by the Maulana Azad Library, Aligarh Muslim University.
He shared insights into the global impact of Koha as an open-source initiative, adding that these software have brought a significant improvement in the use of digital resources, especially in the post-Covid era.
The guests of honour, Prof. Aditya Tripathi, Head, Department of Library and Information Science, Banaras Hindu University, and AMU Registrar, Mr. Mohammad Imran (IPS) emphasized the vital role of technology in academic advancements and urged the participants to leverage open-source tools to enhance their professional competencies.
Earlier, welcoming the guests and participants, the workshop convener and the University Librarian, Prof. Nishat Fatima highlighted the importance of open-source software in modern library management and hoped the participants will get hands-on training in using Koha and DSpace, a platform for creating and managing digital repositories.
In his introductory remarks, Dr. Monawwer Eqbal, Deputy Librarian and The Programme Coordinator, provided an overview of the workshop, emphasizing its role in fostering technical skills among library professionals. He said that more than 90 professionals from all over the country, including places like Pondicherry, Assam, West Bengal, Shillong, Hyderabad and Delhi are attending the workshop.
Dr. Syed Shaz Husain, Assistant Librarian, discussed the implementation of Koha and DSpace in Maulana Azad Library, showcasing AMU’s leadership in adopting innovative digital solutions.
Dr. Shajarul Islam Khan, Assistant Librarian, extended a vote of thanks.
