JEE Advanced 2025: Supreme Court Receives Another Plea for Third Attempt

 Shruti 25/03/2025

Students Seek Extra Attempt for JEE Advanced 2025

A fresh plea has been filed in the Supreme Court of India seeking an additional attempt for JEE Advanced 2025. The petition, backed by 18 students from 16 different states, requests the Joint Admission Board (JAB) of IITs to allow candidates another chance at the prestigious entrance exam for BTech admissions to IITs.

This marks another legal push for relaxation in eligibility norms, as aspirants claim that factors like the COVID-19 pandemic, technical glitches, and personal hardships affected their previous attempts.

Key Highlights of the Plea

  • Petition Filed By: 18 students from 16 states
  • Demand: Third attempt for JEE Advanced 2025
  • Reason: Disruptions due to COVID-19, technical issues, and lack of fair opportunity
  • Filed In: Supreme Court of India
  • Against: IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB)

The petitioners argue that their two attempts were marred by uncontrollable circumstances, and a third attempt would ensure fairness in the IIT admission process.

Why Are Students Demanding a Third Attempt?

1. Disruptions Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic

Many aspirants faced academic disruptions during the pandemic, affecting their preparation and performance in JEE Advanced 2023 and 2024.

2. Technical Glitches During Previous Attempts

Several candidates reported server crashes, incorrect question papers, and other exam-day issues, leading to a significant impact on their scores.

3. Precedents Set by Relaxations in Other Exams

Petitioners cite previous cases where NEET, UPSC, and other entrance exams provided additional attempts to candidates affected by extraordinary circumstances.

4. Ensuring Fair Access to IIT Admissions

Students argue that the JEE Advanced eligibility criteria should be reconsidered, especially for those whose two attempts were severely impacted.

What Happens Next?

The Supreme Court is expected to review the plea and hear arguments from both sides before making a final decision. If the court rules in favor of the students, it could lead to a major policy shift for IIT admissions in 2025.

However, IIT JAB has maintained strict eligibility criteria, allowing only two consecutive attempts for JEE Advanced. The outcome of this case could set a precedent for future engineering aspirants.
