The “Jay Pullur neuroscience initiative,” started by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, aims to advance neuroscience research by constructing cutting-edge facilities at the university.

With this programme, the departments of biological sciences and bioengineering, cognitive science, and the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology will collaborate on neuroscience-related research projects.

On July 21, it was introduced in the IIT Kanpur outreach auditorium.

The effort is being sponsored by a Rs 5 crore endowment provided by Nirmala Jay Pullur, Jay Pullur’s wife and a former student of the institution.

The Jay Pullur non-invasive brain stimulation laboratory and the Jay Pullur reading area at the PK Kelkar Library were also opened as part of the celebration. The event was attended by Vijay Pullur, Jay Pullur’s brother, and other family members.

At IIT Kanpur, Jay Pullur earned his MTech in 1987 in the department of computer science and engineering. He later founded Pramati Technologies, an IT company.

New equipment and systems will be installed in the reading room, and the laboratory will operate in the area of brain stimulation and mapping.

A portion of the endowment fund will also be used to launch lecture series, award student scholarships, and fund research travel grants for students. This will broaden the scope of the research and education available to scientists and students studying neuroscience.

“With the establishment of the ‘Jay Pullur Neuroscience Initiative,’ we embark on a transformative journey in neuroscience research at IIT Kanpur,” remarked Abhay Karandikar, the director of IIT Kanpur. Nirmala Jay Pullur said, “It is very encouraging to see the initiatives taken by IIT Kanpur in the field of neuroscience.

This noble endeavour, made possible by the generous contribution from Nirmala Jay Pullur, will not only propel our institution to the forefront of scientific excellence but also honour the indelible mark left by our alumnus Jay Pullur in the field of science and technology.

Through this project, Jay Pullur’s goal of elevating India to a position of excellence in science and technology will be furthered.
