International Youth Day 2023: why we celebrate, theme, importance

International Youth Day is marked annually on August 12 in order to promote awareness of the challenges and issues that young people globally face as well as their unrealized potential.
THEME:
Every year, International Youth Day focuses on a different subject that emphasises various aspects of empowering and nurturing youth. The theme for 2023 is ‘Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World.‘
“Green skills are the knowledge, abilities, values, and attitudes required to live in, develop, and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society,” according to the United Nations website.
International Youth Day History:
International Youth Day was originally observed on August 12, 2000, and has since been utilised to educate the entire population. On December 17, 1999, the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth recommended it to the UN General Assembly. The United Nations General Assembly began actively striving to educate and inspire children in 1965. They agreed to the declaration, which promotes the values of peace, respect for others, and intercultural understanding.
The United Nations (UN) secretary-general António Guterres says,“Climate change is the fight of our lives – and young people have been on the frontlines leading the charge for climate justice. The unrelenting conviction of young people is central to keeping climate goals within reach, kicking the world’s addiction to fossil fuels, and delivering climate justice.”
