India GRABS gold medal in international Biology Olympiad (IBO); held fromJuly 3 to July 11, 2023
India ranked at the top in the 34th international Biology Olympiad (IBO) held in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from July 3 to July 11, 2023. All the four students from India Dhruv Advani from Bengaluru, Karnataka, Ishan Pednekar from Kota, Rajasthan, Megh Chhabda from Jalna, Maharashtra, and Rohit Panda from Risali, Chattisgarh secured a gold medal for India and topped at the medal tally.
A former professor of Delhi University, Madan M Chaturvedi, V V Binoy from the National Institute of Advanced Studies in Bengaluru, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR);Anupama Road from Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) and Rambhadur Subedi from National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health (NIRRH) Mumbai; accompanied the Indian Team in UAE.
The tournament attracted 293 students from 76 different nations. Singapore received four gold medals in addition to India. The IBO presented 29 gold medals in all. For the first time ever, India won all three gold medals and the most overall medals in the International Biology Olympiad. India has previously led the medal count in several olympiads, including junior science in 2014, 2019, 2021, and 2022, physics in 2018, and astronomy and astrophysics in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2021.
We congratulate all of the Indian students and every member of the Indian delegation for their outstanding accomplishment, said Anwesh Mazumdar, national coordinator of Science Olympiads.
He also applauded the teachers and mentors from all across the country and the Biology Olympiad cell for educating the students at the orientation and pre-departure camps at HBCSE.
Mazumdar also disclosed that on July 12, 2023, at 11:30 AM, a casual interaction session with the students and mentors is planned in Room No. G1 of the Main Building.
