IIM Jammu Campus Temporarily Closed Amid Rising India-Pakistan Tensions

Tensions at the India-Pakistan border have begun to affect institutions in Jammu. In Poonch (pictured), injured civilians were brought to safety after Pakistani forces shelled the area on May 7. The Divisional Commissioner of Jammu issued a precautionary order on May 8 declaring that all schools, colleges and institutes – public and private – in the Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch districts would be closed on May 9 “in view of the prevailing situation”. IIM Jammu, located in Jammu district, therefore suspended classes and campus activities in line with this order.

Official Directives and Timeline

Jammu & Kashmir’s Education Minister Sakina Itoo announced on social media that “all schools, colleges and universities” in the Union Territory would remain closed on May 9 and 10 as a precautionary measure. Similarly, the University of Jammu’s registrar issued an official notice on May 8 stating the university would stay closed that day “in view of the prevailing situation”. These steps followed India’s retaliatory Operation Sindoor on May 7, which targeted terror camps across the Line of Control. The Divisional Commissioner’s May 8 directive explicitly extended the shutdown for May 9 – affecting IIM Jammu’s district – and cited ongoing cross-border shelling as the reason. Academic institutions in the region are therefore scrambling to reschedule exams: for example, Cluster University of Jammu postponed all exams through May 16, and the state SET exam slated for May 11 was deferred.

Impact on Students

For the fully residential IIM Jammu, the sudden shutdown means on-campus classes, seminars and placement events have been put on hold. Dozens of students, many from other states, are currently lodged in campus hostels or rented rooms. They face uncertainty about how long the suspension will last. Elsewhere in the region, travel curbs have stranded many students: for instance, the closure of Srinagar airport and Highway 44 left Kashmiri students unable to reach Delhi for entrance exams. The J&K Students Association has already appealed to authorities for exam postponements under these exceptional circumstances. IIM Jammu officials have so far urged calm, assuring students that campus facilities (including housing) will remain available, and that further updates will be issued as the situation evolves.

Precautionary Closures in Border Regions

The IIM Jammu closure mirrors a wider precaution across border states. In fact, the J&K government extended school and college closures through May 10 across the entire territory. In neighboring Ladakh, Leh’s administration likewise kept all schools shut until at least May 10. Punjab’s government ordered a three-day shutdown of educational institutions starting May 7 – for example, district authorities in Ferozepur imposed a 72‑hour closure, and institutions in Chandigarh suspended exams through May 12. Rajasthan’s border districts also went dark: Jodhpur’s district administration halted classes from May 8 onward, and schools (along with Anganwadis and madrasas) in Barmer, Bikaner and Jaisalmer closed as a precaution. Similar shutdowns and curfews have been reported in parts of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh near the border, underscoring the nationwide caution after Operation Sindoor.

Reactions and Contingency Measures

No serious panic has been reported on the IIM Jammu campus, and authorities have not announced any evacuation. Instead, focus has been on defensive measures. According to news reports, border-area residents have even been moved to temporary shelters as part of precautionary drills during this period. Some schools in Srinagar shifted classes to virtual mode for May 9 (though IIM Jammu’s management has not publicly detailed its own remote-teaching plans). Faculty members are in touch with students by phone and online to ensure everyone’s safety. Campus leaders say they will follow government guidance: classes will resume only when authorities lift the closure order. In the meantime, all hostels and facilities remain open, and placement interviews or guest lectures scheduled this week are expected to be postponed or re‑arranged.
