Expansion of Four-Year Undergraduate Programs: 105 Universities to Implement New Structure, Including Central and State Institutions

According to the University Grants Commission (UGC), as stated by Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar in response to a question from Lok Sabha member Bharti Shiyal, 105 universities across the country have introduced four-year undergraduate programs. The implementation of these programs is in line with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which suggests offering undergraduate degrees with a flexible duration of three to four years, providing multiple exit options for students.
Under this system, students have the freedom to choose their desired exit points based on the duration of their studies. For instance, after completing one year in a specific discipline or field, including vocational and professional areas, students will receive a certificate. After two years of study, they will be awarded a diploma, and upon successful completion of three years, they will obtain a bachelor’s degree. This approach aims to give students more choices and opportunities to tailor their academic journey according to their preferences and career aspirations.
In the previous month, the UGC announced that a total of 105 universities will be commencing four-year undergraduate programs, which comprise 19 central universities, 40 deemed-to-be universities, 18 state private universities, and 22 state universities.
