Today, Educational Testing Services (ETS), a non-profit organisation that conducts educational evaluation, research, and measurement, established a new test site in Mumbai for GRE and TOEFL candidates. The centre will be founded in collaboration with international education consultant Collegepond.
The centre is situated in the city’s Vile Parle neighbourhood, adjacent to a number of educational institutions. According to ETS, the site was picked to make it unnecessary for students to make lengthy travels, allowing them to concentrate on studying for their exams.
“The centre will provide valuable resources and services to test takers in the city, and thereby help to further ETS’s commitment to fostering educational growth and global competence,” said Lejo Sam Oommen, chief revenue officer of ETS India.
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) are both administered by ETS. It claimed that each year, thousands of students take the GRE and the TOEFL in Mumbai. The new testing facility is only one of the ways that ETS is assisting candidates in achieving their objective of attending an international university.
“For more than two decades, our organisation has been at the forefront of study abroad consulting, assisting countless students in defining their academic journey,” said Suraj Bajaj, Collegepond’s chief executive officer. Our legacy goes beyond just admissions support. We give students the freedom to choose important options that will shape their futures in further education and the workforce.
What are the GRE and TOEFL Tests Used For?
The GRE and TOEFL: the rationale for taking them, before delving deeper into the two exams. The TOEFL is a test of your English language proficiency, whereas the GRE is an entrance exam for graduate schools.
Schools want to check your GRE and TOEFL results to ensure that you can manage graduate-level material and that you have sufficient English proficiency to succeed at an English-speaking institution. These various aims are the root cause of the numerous discrepancies between the two exams.
The GRE Overview
A standardized test called the GRE is used to gauge a test-taker’s readiness for graduate school. The GRE is divided into three main sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing.
You will have 30 minutes to complete each of the two essays in Analytical Writing. Analytical Writing grades range from 0 to 6, with each half-point worth one point.
There are two sections of 20 questions each for Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Reasoning, for a total of 80 multiple-choice questions. The grading system for both verbal and quantitative reasoning is the same. The range of their scores, in one-point increments, is 130–170.
Subject | Number of Questions | Time Given |
---|---|---|
Analytical Writing | 2 essays | 60 minutes |
Verbal Reasoning (two sections) | 20 questions per section | 30 minutes per section |
Quantitative Reasoning (two sections) | 20 questions per section | 35 minutes per section |
The ETS, which also creates the GRE, produces the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), a test of English language competency. Non-native speakers wishing to enrol in an English-language university (undergraduate or graduate) are required to take the TOEFL to assess their level of English proficiency.
The four portions of the TOEFL—Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing—take up a total of 3.5 hours. You will be given a score between 0 and 30 for each section. When these values are combined, your overall TOEFL score ranges from 0-120.
Section | Number of Questions | Time Given |
---|---|---|
Reading | 36-56 | 60-80 minutes |
Listening | 34-51 | 60-90 minutes |
Speaking | 6 tasks | 20 minutes |
Writing | 2 tasks | 50 minutes |
