Central University of Odisha Organises Workshop on Visual Content Verification

Central University of Odisha organised a workshop on Visual Content Verification at its Sunabeda Campus on January 28, 2025. The one day workshop was jointly organised by Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and NSS Bureau of CUO. On this occasion the Dean, Student’s Welfare (DSW), Dr. Ramendra Kumar Parhi congratulated the students and faculty members for the workshop and suggested students to learn the basic techniques and tool for verification of visual contents before sharing it with anyone.
Prof. Manash Pratim Goswami, Professor of Journalism & Mass Communication, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong and Google News Initiative, India Training Network Trainer conducted the workshop as the resource person. He provided hands-on training to the students on use of various tools for visual content verification. Sharing his insights on the workshop, he deliberated how text, images and visuals can be verified. In the digital era, Prof. Goswami cautioned students and participants on the harmful impact of misinformation, disinformation and mal-information. With the advent of social media and its rising influence in our lives it has become necessary to cross check all information before forwarding or sharing it, said Prof. Goswami.
Dean Students’ Welfare of CUO Dr. Ramendra Parhi was the Chief Guest on the occasion. He stressed the need for rightful information in the present world of social media. Head of the Department of J&MC Dr. Nikhil Kumar Gouda delivered the welcome address and informed the purpose of the Workshop. Dr. Gouda shared his experience on the need of verification of contents and an important tool for media practitioners and journalists. NSS coordinator of CUO Dr. Anjaneyulu Thotapally proposed the vote of thanks. Other dignitaries present on the occasion were Dr. Gurjit Singh Walia, Dr. Pradosh Kumar Rath, Public Relations Officer Dr. Phagunath Bhoi, Mr. Sumit Kumar Behera, Dr. Sony Parhi, Dr. Talat Jahan Begum and others. The workshop was attended by more than 100 students who were given hands-on training on various aspects of digital content verification and application of softwares for checking the authenticity of information.
