Amritapuri Mechanical Engineering Team Wins Runner-Up Award at IMTEX Exhibition, Bangalore
The Mechanical Engineering team from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus, has secured the Runner-Up Award and a cash prize of ₹25,000 at the prestigious IMTEX Exhibition, held in Bangalore. IMTEX is the largest Machine Tool and Manufacturing Technology Show in South and Southeast Asia, drawing participation from leading institutions and innovators in the field. This is the fifth time that the department’s research projects have been selected for the award at the IMTEX Exhibition.
Out of 65 colleges that applied, only 34 teams were shortlisted for the competition. The Amritapuri team impressed judges with their innovative project titled “A Novel Multi-Fingered Hydro-formed Metallic Bellow Robotic Hand for Prosthetic & Industrial Applications,” earning recognition for its technical ingenuity and potential real-world applications.
The project focuses on the development of a cost-effective, durable, and versatile robotic hand designed for both prosthetic and industrial applications. A key innovation lies in the use of hydro-formed metallic bellows as bending joints, which significantly enhances the device’s stiffness, load-carrying capacity, and durability. This approach addresses critical challenges faced by traditional prosthetic technologies.
Designed to benefit amputees, the EMG-controlled robotic hand offers an affordable alternative to expensive prosthetic devices while maintaining superior functionality. Its ability to mimic natural hand movements and handle greater loads also makes it suitable for industrial automation tasks.
The award-winning project was led by:
Mr. S. Lokanath (Final Year, Mechanical Engineering)
Mr. K. Vishnu Raj (Ph.D. Research Scholar)
Dr. Ganesha Udupa (Mentor, Professor & Dean)
Speaking on the achievement, the team credited their success to rigorous research, dedication, and the supportive academic environment at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. This milestone not only showcases their innovative capabilities but also reinforces Amrita’s role in advancing technological excellence on a global platform.
The recognition at IMTEX adds to Amrita’s growing list of accomplishments in engineering and technology, inspiring future innovations in prosthetics and robotics.
