11th Edition of Shaheed Memorial Cricket Tournament at UPES to support braveheart’s family with ₹5 Lakh and Job Opportunity

  17/01/2025

UPES, a multidisciplinary university in Dehradun, inaugurated the 11th edition of its annual Shaheed Memorial Cricket Tournament under Project Naman. This initiative is a heartfelt tribute to the bravehearts of the Indian Armed Forces and extends financial support to their families as a gesture of gratitude for their selfless service to the nation.

This year, the tournament honours Veergati Prapt PTR Amit Kumar Anthwal , a valiant soldier from the 4 PARA Special Forces, who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation on April 5, 2020, during an operation in the Kupwara Keran sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Hailing from Village Kola in District Pauri, Uttarakhand, Amit Kumar Anthwal’s life exemplified courage and patriotism. He is survived by his parents, Shri Nagendra Prasad Anthwal (77) and Smt. Bhagwati Devi (65), who now reside in Bhauwawala, Dehradun.

As part of Project Naman, UPES will contribute ₹5 lakh to the family of the brave paratrooper who was only 30 years old when he laid down his life for the nation. Additionally, the university will provide a job opportunity to one family member, reflecting its unwavering commitment to supporting the families of those who safeguard the nation’s freedom.

The tournament was inaugurated today at the Bidholi Cricket Ground. Eight teams are participating in this year’s competition: UPES Blue, Pay Jal Nigam, PWD, UPCL Roorkee, Irrigation Haridwar, MDDA, Agricultural, and Jal Sansthan. These teams will compete fiercely for the championship title over the next week. The final match is scheduled for January 9, 2025.

First conceptualised nearly a decade ago, the Shaheed Memorial Cricket Tournament has become an annual tradition that reflects the university’s philosophy of being a purpose-driven institution. Organised on a no-profit basis, the event is largely supported by UPES, its staff, and voluntary contributions from participating teams. Through Project Naman and other CSR initiatives, UPES continues to create a meaningful impact in the community by honouring the sacrifices of India’s bravehearts and supporting their families.
