CMAT 2022 Exam Pattern Change – Impact on Score vs Percentile
CMAT 2022is one of the leading MBA Entrance Exams in India that is accepted for admission by over 600 MBA colleges in India. The exam pattern has seen a change this year, the new Innovation & Entrepreneurship section in the exam was made compulsory. There were 20 questions in this section.
Therefore, CMAT 2022 was a 400-mark exam with a duration of 3 hours. This will also have an impact on the score vs percentile for certain candidates. The expected score will be higher based on the previous year’s analysis. The changed exam pattern for CMAT 2022 has been given below.
Sections | Number of Questions | Maximum Marks Section-wise |
---|---|---|
Language Comprehension | 20 | 80 |
Innovation and Entrepreneurship | 20 | 80 |
Logical Reasoning | 20 | 80 |

Calculation of CMAT Percentile
The CMAT Percentile vs Score graph shows the percentage of students that scored at or below a specific CMAT percentile on the exam. As a result, the top-scoring participant in each session will receive the same CMAT percentile of 100. The scores earned between the lowest and highest are also converted to CMAT percentiles.
To eliminate the bunching effect and decrease ties, percentile scores are calculated to 7 decimal places. A candidate’s CMAT percentile score is computed based on their CMAT score using the following formula:
Total Percentile (TP1) = 100 x (No. of candidates who appeared from the session with raw score EQUAL TO or LESS than T1 score/ Total No. of candidates who appeared in the session). However, The committee also has a proper formula to calculate the candidates’ percentile, which is: P=( 1 – All India rank( No. of candidates in that subject) x 100
Following the method below is an easy approach for students to compute their percentage based on rank:
P= 100*{(Total number of candidates who appear for the exam – rank obtained)/Total number of candidates who appeared for the exam}. Perhaps, if there are around 10,000 candidates who appear for CMAT 2022 exam and one of the candidates secures 8th rank. Then his or her CMAT percentile will be
P = 10000-8/10000*100
The calculation brings us to 99.92. This means that his or her CMAT percentile of the exam will be 99.92. As you can see, percentiles of all the candidates will and are calculated in this way, using just this formula.
Process for Calculating CMAT Score vs. Percentile
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has developed a method for calculating the CMAT percentile score from the exam's raw score. For instance, in the CMAT, a raw score of 170 can earn you a 65 percentile, whereas a score between 251 and 342 earns you a 95 to 99.99 percentile. There are several steps in the CMAT exam's determination of score vs percentile. Please provide the CMAT score vs. percentile for MBA admission as determined by NTA.
Your CMAT exam results, including your raw sectional and overall scores.
Prior to determining percentile, CMAT scores are standardized and equated for the complexity of all shifts.
This unscaled CMAT score has been transformed.
The CMAT scaled score to percentile score conversion.
The CMAT 2022 scoring scheme
The CMAT 2022 scoring scheme is as follows:
- 400 maximum points
- 100 questions altogether
- Each accurate response receives four points, and each incorrect response loses one point.
- Raw and percentile scores are included on the CMAT Score Card.
Percentile scores are produced through score normalisation and score scaling:
The process of translating the raw CMAT score to the percentile score again depends on a variety of variables, including the quantity of applicants who took the exam and the difficulty level of the question bank. Scores are determined after accounting for everything. Score normalisation continues in this manner, producing percentile scores.
Normalization is influenced by LoD
Because both components account for the degree of difficulty of the CMAT exam, the scaling and normalisation process for CMAT results has also resulted in some alterations. The scaled score acquired by this technique are turned into percentiles for comparison purposes, however the normalisation process, as announced for CMAT 2022 scores, correct for location and scale variances of score distributions across different forms.
The CMAT asserts to offer the most transparent procedure for percentile calculation and score normalisation. The procedure asserts that it focuses on equity, fairness, and comparison of test-taker achievements in CMAT 2022.
GATE pattern for percentile conversion
Similar to those being used in other significant educational selection examinations being performed in India, such as Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, the procedure of normalisation is an accepted practise for comparing applicant scores across several Forms (GATE).
Understand the slightly modified GATE method first in order to comprehend the conversion of raw score to percentile score and to learn about the score normalisation process in CMAT 2022.
Those taking the GATE exam or who are familiar with the procedure can comprehend it more fully, however The GATE procedure must first be understood by individuals who are unfamiliar with it. In reality, those who are taking the CMAT in 2022 with backgrounds in business, science, medicine, Para medicine, and humanities are still unaware of the formula used to calculate percentile VS scores.
Process of GATE normalisation
The CE, CS, EC, EE, and ME exams were given in a number of sessions in 2018. In order to account for any variations in the difficulty levels of the question sets over the multiple sessions, a suitable normalising method was used. The primary premise behind the normalisation was that “the distribution of candidate abilities in all multi-session GATE papers is the same throughout all the sessions.”
The GATE committee claims that this assumption is accurate since there are many applicants competing in GATE’s multi-session disciplines, and candidates are randomly assigned to sessions. Additionally, it is made sure that the number of applicants assigned to each session for the same subject with several sessions is of the same size.
GATE equation
Based on the information above, the committee developed the following formula to determine the normalised marks for the topics of CE, CS, EC, EE, and ME. The following new formula will be used to calculate a candidate's GATE score starting with GATE 2014 (and year 2014–15 of the 2-year validity period of GATE 2013 score).
where S stands for a candidate's normalised score; M = The candidate's marks (or "normalised marks" in the case of topics with numerous sessions, such as CE, CS, EC, EE, and ME); Mq = Qualifying marks for applicants in the general category in that subject (often 25, plus one more point, whichever is higher); = The overall average (or arithmetic mean) of all candidates' marks in that subject; = The standard deviation of all candidates' test scores in that topic; Mt = Top 0.1% applicants' typical marks(for subjects where ten thousand or more candidates have applied), or the top ten candidates (for subjects where fewer than ten thousand candidates have applied); Mt had a score of 900 while Mq received a score of 350.
Percentile
The percentile of a candidate represents the proportion of other candidates who scored lower than that specific candidate. It is determined by: Percentile is equal to 100% x (1 – All India rank (number of candidates in that subject).
CMAT 2022 formula application
It is possible to develop a formula to determine the CMAT percentile. The following formula would be used by CMAT experts to normalise scores:
The formula for the normalised mark (Mij) of the jth candidate in the ith slot is as follows:
Mij represents the actual score received by the jth candidate in the ith slot, Mgt is the average score of the top 0.1% of candidates across all slots, and Mgq represents the total of the mean and standard deviation of all candidates’ scores across all slots.Mti is the average of marks of top 0.1 % candidates in the ith slot, Miq is the sum of mean and standard deviation of marks of all candidates in the ith slot.
The Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) is a national level MBA entrance exam for admission to 1,000 AICTE-approved management programmes (MBA/PGDM) across India that is organised and administered by the government. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which was established by the Indian government, administers the test. All test takers have a unique opportunity with the CMAT because there is no disqualification in the results.

There are 100 total questions, 100 in each of the four sections. One receives 4 marks for each accurate response, while receiving a mark deducted for each incorrect response. The exam has a maximum score of 400.
CMAT percentile: The formula for calculating the percentile is shown below.
Percentile is calculated using the formula P = ((N-your rank)/N*100).
P is the percentile in this formula, whereas N is the number of candidates appearing in the exam.

Important Points
- Candidates were able to attain a better percentile in CMAT 2020 despite having a lower score than in CMAT 2019.
- This means that the average score of the batch declined, and pupils did not achieve the same level of success as in the previous year’s exam.
- One possible explanation for this is that students perceived the exam to be more challenging because the exam format remained the same.
Now, let’s go through what CMAT scores and percentiles are and how they are computed in greater detail.
What is CMAT Score?
General Awareness, Language Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Technique & Data Interpretation are the four areas of the CMAT test. Each part of the CMAT 2022 consists of 25 questions for 100 points (4 marks), for a total of 400 points (100 questions). There is, however, a -1 penalty for each incorrect response. The overall score in the CMAT is obtained by adding or subtracting the marks gained or lost in each question.
How to Calculate CMAT Score?
The table below explains the process to calculate the CMAT 2022 score with examples, let us have a look at it for a better understanding of the process:
Name of the Student | Questions Answered | No. of Correct Answers | No. of Wrong Answers | Marks Awarded for Correct Answers | Marks Deducted for Incorrect Answers | CMAT Final Score |
---|
X | 97 | 90 | 7 | 90 X 4 = 360 | -7 | 360 – 7 = 353 |
Y | 100 | 78 | 22 | 78 X 4 = 312 | -22 | 312 – 22 = 290 |
Z | 100 | 84 | 16 | 84 X 4 = 336 | -16 | 336 – 16 = 320 |
A | 100 | 62 | 38 | 62 X 4 = 248 | -38 | 248 – 38 = 210 |
As per the above example, wrong answers by students will have a negative impact on the overall CMAT score.
CMAT Rank Allotment Process
Candidates’ CMAT rankings are assigned based on their overall CMAT score. If two applicants receive the same/similar CMAT scores, they will be assigned the same rank. The order on the rank list, on the other hand, will be alphabetical.
Here is an example of the CMAT rank allotment method to assist students understand what occurs if two or more students achieve the same score:
Name of the Student | CMAT Overall Score | CMAT AIR (All India Rank) |
---|---|---|
A | 380 | 1 |
B | 379 | 2 |
C | 379 | 2 |
D | 378 | 4 |
E | 377 | 5 |
F | 377 | 5 |
G | 376 | 7 |
How to Calculate CMAT Percentile?
Based on the rank secured by students in the exam, the percentile score is determined. The percentile score determines the score of the candidates equal to or less than the score of other candidates in the exam. CMAT percentile is calculated by applying the following formula –
Percentile (P) = N (Total No. of Candidates Appeared in CMAT Exam) – Rank of the Candidate divided by N multiplied by 100
Check the example below for a better understanding.
Example
Let us assume that 50,000 candidates appeared for the exam. The percentile of 5 students might be as follows:
