In reaction to a survey that claimed that males make up the majority of computer users worldwide, an Indian corporation created the inaugural World Computer Literacy Day in 2001.

World Computer Literacy Day is observed on December 2 of each year. World Computer Literacy Day, established in 2001, aims to close the digital gap by spreading computer literacy to the farthest reaches of the globe and, in particular, by promoting the use of technology skills among Indian women and children.

The National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT), an Indian firm, created World Computer Literacy Day in 2001 to commemorate the institution’s 20th birthday. A survey that claimed that males make up the majority of computer users worldwide prompted the creation of the day.

Rajendra S. Pawar, Chairman and Co-Founder of NIIT Group and Founder of NIIT University, gave the following history and importance of World Computer Literacy Day: “World Computer Literacy Day was first commemorated on NIIT’s 20th Foundation Day on December 2, 2001. In the presence of the then-Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, members of Parliament received computer training, and a special postal envelope was presented to represent the growth of computer literacy throughout the nation.

According to Mr. Pawar, this idea quickly developed into a movement that tens of thousands of students all across the world have joined. When NIIT was established 40 years ago, its sole goal was to “bring people and computers together. This mission has evolved throughout time into a larger theme of ‘helping people reach their true potential.
