12 new degree-granting institutions

The Meghalaya cabinet approved a plan to establish 12 new degree-granting institutions in the state on Tuesday, December 13. This announcement was made just prior to the Meghalayan elections for the legislature. The state is scheduled to hold elections early in 2019.

After the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma spoke to the media and announced that the cabinet had also passed an ordinance renaming Capt. Williamson Sangma Technical Hospital. Capt Williamson Sangma State University, for example. According to a report by PTI, this is the first state-run university in Meghalaya.

The proposal to begin BA and BCom courses at Tura’s College of Teacher Education also received clearance from the cabinet. 39 new posts will be made with this in mind. Moreover, in the New Education Policy (NEP), which mandates that colleges offer multi-discipline courses, was the reason for doing this.

The College of Architecture & Planning Tura (CAPT) and the Shillong Government College of Engineering (SGCE) each received up to 50 new positions, respectively. Cabinet approval is required. In this regard, Sangma claimed that the colleges’ infrastructure was 99.9% complete.

Each year, the government would invest Rs 2.8 crore in SGCE and Rs 2.7 crore in CAPT. By the middle of the next year, the colleges are anticipated to begin their first session.

Additionally, the Meghalaya Medical Services Recruitment Board has been given permission to fill open positions through recruitment exams thanks to a modification to the Meghalaya Health Services Rules gained the cabinet’s approval. According to Sangma, the cabinet also adopted a compensation policy for under-trial inmate fatalities in compliance with the National Human Rights Commission’s directive. Rights Commission (NHRC), according to a PTI report.
