IIT Kharagpur
In place of the five-year integrated MSc programme, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur adopted a four-year BS programme in the 2022 academic year. Applied geology, chemistry, economics, exploratory geophysics, mathematics and computing, and physics are the six specialties available for the BA degree. At the conclusion of Semester 6 of the four-year BS programme, candidates who are interested in acquiring an MS degree will have the option to do so. So, the planning of semesters 7 and 8 will ensure that a candidate can receive an MS degree at the conclusion of semester 10.
BS Program- Course Structure
Eight semesters are equally allocated across the six BS specialization courses. The first and second semesters of each of the six BS courses follow a similar curriculum. In total, the first and second semesters will teach students eighteen basic disciplines, including chemistry, physics of waves, science of living systems, programming and data structures, electrical technology, and English for communication.
With semester 3, the curriculum has changed. Students will be taught about 8 to 9 “deep core” subjects in semesters 3 and 4. In semesters 5 and 6, there will be seven to eight core subjects and two elective subjects. The seventh semester’s curriculum offers students the chance to complete a project and a summer internship. The majority of Semester 8 is made up of a project and a mix of core and elective courses.
IIT Kharagpur’s academic year is primarily separated into the spring and autumn semesters. By the end of the third year of the BS programme, candidates may also choose to pursue an MS degree.
Seat Matrix for the BS Program
The number of seats IIT Kharagpur offered last year is as follows:
Course | Seat Capacity |
---|---|
Chemistry | 45 |
Economics | 59 |
Physics | 49 |
Mathematics & Computing | 69 |
Applied Geology | 52 |
Exploration Geophysics | 45 |
BS Program: Eligibility criteria
JEE Advanced scores and JOSSA counselling are used by the institute to determine who gets admitted to the BS programme. Also, candidates must have successfully completed class 12 in the science stream or an equivalent.
BS Program: Job Opportunities
Graduates with a BS in chemistry have job options in industries like pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, materials and devices, energy, healthcare, and the environment. While a BS in physics can lead to a career in a variety of fields, including green energy and sustainable energy materials, photonics and terahertz technology and communications, quantum technology and communications, quantum open systems, flexible electronics, multifunctional materials and devices, smart energy for smart cities, and smart healthcare, there are also many other career options.
