IIT Guwahati Develops an AI-assisted Model To Predict Thigh Bone Fracture Healing

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have created an AI-enabled model to predict the healing of thigh bone fractures after surgery. Souptick Chanda, assistant professor in the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at IIT Guwahati, and his team created the model.

According to an official statement, the model can be used to evaluate the healing outcomes of various fracture fixation strategies in order to select the best strategy for the patient based on their personal physiologies and fracture type. According to the statement, using such precision models can reduce healing time, economic burden, and pain for patients who require thigh fracture treatment.

The findings of this study were recently published in the open-source journal PLOS One in the form of a paper co-authored by Souptick Chanda and his research scholar, Pratik Nag.

‘AI has tremendous potential for understanding and predicting complex biological phenomena, and thus can play a significant role in health sciences applications,’  Chanda said of the study.

Furthermore, the research team used a combination of Finite Element Analysis and the AI tool, Fuzzy Logic, to understand the healing process of fracture after various treatment methods, according to the statement. For this purpose, various bone-growth parameters were used in conjunction with a rule-based simulation scheme. The study went on to compare the fracture healing efficacies of each process by examining the influence of different screw fixation mechanisms. The model’s healing predictions agreed well with experimental observations, indicating its dependability.

According to the statement, IIT Guwahati’s AI-based simulation model may be able to assist a surgeon in selecting the appropriate implant or technique prior to a fracture-treatment surgery. The model can account for various clinical phenomena, such as smoking and diabetes, in addition to various biological and patient-specific parameters. The model can also be applied to veterinary fractures, which are physiologically and, in many ways, similar to those seen in human patients.

Furthermore, the researchers intend to create a software/app based on the algorithm that can be used in hospitals and other healthcare facilities as part of their fracture treatment protocols. The team is currently working with Bhaskar Borgohain and his team of orthopaedists from the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences Hospital in Shillong to validate and fine-tune certain parameters through animal studies. 

The research conducted by IIT Guwahati researchers is important because the incidences of thigh-bone and hip fractures have increased significantly due to the world’s growing geriatric population. Every year, an estimated 2 lakh hip fractures occur in India alone, the majority of which necessitate hospitalization and trauma care. Hip fracture treatment has traditionally included the use of bone plates and rods to bridge the fracture site and promote bone healing. Surgeons choose fracture treatment methods intuitively based on their experience, and there is no way to predict the efficacy and success of the treatment method chosen. According to the statement, the IIT Guwahati research will help increase the accuracy rate in orthopaedic decision-making, thereby reducing the cost and disease burden associated with fracture recovery.
